This happened recently where I live.
That's so sad. I wonder what's going to happen to the man who hit all those people. RIP for the people who lost their lives.

Glad you got home safe! especially with your son on the passenger seat.
I once drove from Detroit, MI to Denver, CO in one day which was about 18 1/2 hour drive.
Good coffee and a pack of cigarettes help.

I'm on the road all day everyday for my job. I'm an outside account mngr with a decent sized territory. When I find myself nodding off the only thing that works is to pull over and close your eyes for 15 to 30 minutes. You will find that you can go alot further by doing that. If you combine a little nap with a Mountain Dew chaser, your good for at least another 6 hours!!!

I used to drive from davis to santa cruz to visit my gf, about a 3 hour drive (I usually kept it under 2.5...). I used to leave my place at around midnight to 2am. It's definitely not safe, your reaction time is drastically reduced, your coordination is off, they had a study that showed that it was worse than driving at the legal alcohol level (.08).
Still, managed to do all those trips without causing any accidents; my trick was to sing along to songs really really loudly and have something either fizzy or citrusy to drink.

I did this last Sunday after pulling an all-nighter in Atlantic City. I fell asleep for 1 second and woke up right after that blink. It was a weird feeling. I pulled over a few times.

I will not do this again. Sucks my friends can't drive stick.

Meh, I wouldn't let my non-S owning friends drive my car anyway

The RedBulls and other energy drinks do okay I suppose, but if you don't keep drinking them, the "crash" when they start to wear off comes worse then if you didn't have one.

I have a very weak near-sightedness. I can drive and do most anything else without corrective lenses, but I do lose some clarity. I've discovered that I get much sleepier if I drive long distances without the glasses on. I can see just fine, but I fall asleep after a few hours. With the glasses, though, I can stay alert much longer.

Some cars will beep at you if you don't take 2 hour breaks.

And I'm guessing that "my boy" means "mah boyeeee" rather than "my son."
I could be wrong, though.

Been in that situation and stretching, AC, radio can help. But if you're too over-tired, you'll still be nodding off. 15 minute nap if you can do it in a safe place (remember what happened to Michael Jordan's dad).

Not necessarily recommending this, but I find that in desperate times... keeping yourself mentally engaged in a telephone conversation or listening to an audiobook can keep enough of your brain awake to prevent nodding off. This is obviously not recommended for traffic. I have known people who have watched TV shows on video IPODs to keep awake. Once again, not necessarily recommending this (I hate cell phone drivers)... but for desperate situations only, better than driving off the road.
Yes....definately my friend....not son.....

either way, we would've probably gotten hurt the same way

but i don't need a kid at 20 yrs old......thats why i chose a car with 1 other seat ....not 3
