I'm on the road all day everyday for my job. I'm an outside account mngr with a decent sized territory. When I find myself nodding off the only thing that works is to pull over and close your eyes for 15 to 30 minutes. You will find that you can go alot further by doing that. If you combine a little nap with a Mountain Dew chaser, your good for at least another 6 hours!!!
I have heard good things about taking a 20 minute nap to get you going again. I just switched from midshift to dayshift and bought my S2000 last weekend so I haven't been sleeping much at night. I stopped for an energy drink after leaving work for my 20 minute drive home to ensure I wouldn't be nodding off or zoning out. That was the second energy drink I have ever had since I hate the taste and think they are bad for you. It did seem to work well. If you nod off and have an accident, your insurance costs will go thru the roof. I think you get put in high risk insurance.

I once rode my ZX11 ninja from texas to florida for 26 hours straight. I rode thru the night following a 1970's goldwing to make sure he didn't break down. Unfortunately he slowed me down and I lost a lot of time. I was hallucinating badly at the end. I was too dangerous to be on the road regardless of how close I was to my destination. Now I know my life is worth the price of a hotel room.

I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody mention talking to your passenger if you have one (in this case he did). Though I did quickly skim through the other posts.

Anyway, when I have a passenger, I wake them up. They always understand...and you'd be surpirsed how well both of you can stay awake going off of eachothers energy. If your alone and you can call someone, I do. And if I know a good friend of mine is going to be doing a long drive late at night I set myself alarms in the night to wake up and call them for 5 minutes. Just those little calls keep somebody awake and driving. They will wait those extra 55 minutes between calls and the simple anticipation for a call will keep them awake.

These are things that I have found help me the most. I've tried the loud music or sticking head out the window, putting the A/C on full blast. None of that really works.

Of course though, like others mentioned the best thing to do is just pull over a either get out and move around for a while...or sleep.
