Not hard to get extra 50 Bhp without resorting to forced induction, i.e. : chip, exhaust, header.
My father-in-law's 750iL is a match for the Stook. So much torque and power in it you just drop your foot and you are off like a freight train. Maybe if you 100% nailed your launch you could pull on him for a bit but once you get around 100 mph the BMW just keeps building. I want one!
You were playing the BMW 850's game on the 850's turf.
If you're just going to open it up on the highway, the 850 is hard to beat, but...
If you took an exit off the highway onto some twisty secondary roads where handling and braking are put to the test (i.e., sports car capabilities) the outcome would be very different!

The last 850Ci (1997 model) weighed 4288 lbs and had a 5.4L V-12 with 322HP, 361 FT/LB of torque and an automatic (same for '96 and '95; '94 had the 5.0L with 296HP and 322 FT/LBs of torque).
The 850Csi was made only for '95 and '94, with a 5.6L V-12 making 372HP and 402 FT/LB of torque, a six-speed manual and weighing 4234 lbs ('95) or 4168lb ('94).
Never drove one, but my '95 XJ12 (6.0L V-12 with 313HP at 4420 lb) surprised quite a few other cars, esp going up hills where the massive torque of 353 FT/LBs came into full play.
V-12s are great torque engines, but you've gotta keep an eye out for cheap premium gas -- I got 10.5 to 12 in the city and about 16 on the highway.
