I know its been discussed....but.....
Does anyone have a picture of a Silver S2k with the Window frame tape removed? I am considering doing this to my car, but I would love to be able to see a pic of it first. Thanks in advance!!
Jay Li, do you have a pic available? I am curious also. I am pretty sure I know which tape you are talking about now. I was looking at the frame closely this weekend and I noticed the black tape's openings at the top of the window frame. I imagined this is where you pried the tape off. Due to Jay's findings I think I will leave the tape alone. But it would be nice to see a pic. Thanks also.
Hey, that's my car. I don't have any other pictures at work but I will try to remember and bring some in and post those as well. My S2000 came from the dealer without the tape on it so I don't know what is involved in taking it off. Greg Stevens has a bunch of pictures of his car without the tape and removed it himself.
Hey, do you mean the window frame is actually body-colored underneath soem kind of a black-out tape? And that tape can be removed?
That would be great news, as I'm one of those people who prefers a body-coloured window frame. My on-order car will be silver and I had planned to have the frame painted Silverstone. Can I avoid that route and go a simpler way?

Yes. On the 2000 S2000 the winshield frame had black tape covering a body colored frame. This can be removed and is messy and once done you're stuck with it. Some people did it and wished they hadn't while others loved it. I wasn't given the choice because the dealer had done it upon delivery. I wasn't even aware the tape was there until I read a thread on one of the earlier boards.
Velllly intellestink. I hope those who removed the tape and didn't like it gelt that way just because of the look cosmetically rather than because of any physical down-sides or after-effects of the process.
I have noticed that in the first few years of the Z3 and the Boxster the widnow frames were also all black, regardless of the body color. But in the past year or two they've switched to a body-color match. The Miata has always had a color match, as have most classic convertibles; maybe that's why I prefer it -- I've just gotten used to it as the standard.
As for the appeal of blacked-out frames on non-black cars, I just don't get it.

Someone reported that the paint on the frame on his car was not perfect, the tape hid scratches i think. That's something to consider too since removing the tape most likely can't be un-done. But i guess the worst that could happen is you would have to have the frame painted.
I took off my tape and I'm glad I did; however, I think it looks better with the tape on when the top is up and better off when the top is lowered, but overall the tape off is definiely an improvement. Remember, when you peel the tape you have a residue of glue left that has been referred to as boogers by me and some others. A product called Kleen Strip Gum & Adhesive Remover works great to remove the residual glue; it's available at Pep Boys.
