Default I Used To Hate S2000's

HI all. This is my first post.

So I was saving my money to buy a car. My dream car has always been the nissan 350z.
After Driving the car I was pretty disapointed. The whole reason I wanted a sports car was because I'm young and wanted something fun to drive. But the Z didnt feel anything like a fun to drive sporty car to me. It felt more like a muscle car with almost truck like acceleration (power low end, runs out of breath at higher revs).

I've driven small hatchbacks that were more fun to drive. So I figured, maybe a minicooper but it was too funky for me. So I decided to try the civic si just for the hell of it.
What a blast!!! It was exactly what I was looking for. Light, comunnicative and an engine that loves to be driven hard. It wasnt as fast as the 350z, but it was 10 times more fun to drive! But it was too similar to cars I've driven in the past.

My friend, who races cars and who I respect the most when it comes to cars, happens to drive a S2000.
I never bothered asking him about his car because the S2000 has always seemed like a silly car to me. What kind of sports car has only a 4 cylinder engine with no turbo and only 240 horsepower? Not to mention it being a convertible which causes loss in rigidity. I have always thought of it as a hairdresses car thats more about looking good then ultimate performance. Vtec has always sounded silly to me, But after driving the civic si I couldnt ignore it. Vtec is no joke.

So I asked my friend about his car, and he explained what he enjoys about it as a race car driver. I explained that the S2000 doesnt sound very impressive on paper to me. He simply smirked and said, "drive one". And so I did, and this is the result.

The S2000 was my dream car. I just didnt know it
Funny thing is, people still ask me where my 350z is.

Sounds a bit like my story. The S2000 never really interested me too much until about 2 years ago, then I had to get one.

Nice.. Excellent choice..

I went to the Honda dealer and asked to test drive one, the dealer tossed me the keys to me and my friend and I came back an hour later, and took the car home the next day.. Car is amazing and I knew I had to have it the first time I hit Vtec exiting a corner..

I'm amazed that people hate on it at all.. Must just be ignorance..

While I NEVER hated the S (always loved it infact, even though I couldnt afford them when they came out) the first time I drove one COULD have been detrimental to my future ownership. It was a 01 sebring and was summer time and i took it out with the top down. while it was fun to drive (honestly had never driven a vert before this) it felt.....like a 2 seat civic. Of course I was just putting around <4k. Luckily the salesman said "get on it a little, take it to redline!" So, I did.. chirped the tires going into 2nd and was like damn....

While I did not drive THAT one (body sucked) i was on a constant search to get outta the Audi TT I had and into an S

While I have liked a lot of cars that have came out....it seems like the more I learn about them, and finally when i drive them I just like them less and less. the S2000 was the complete opposite. The more I learn, the more often I played dumb with dealers just to get a test drive....the more i needed it!

When I was making my decision, the s2000 looked the best on paper.

I looked at:

Power/Weight, Weight, Slalom, Skidpad, Acceleration numbers, and Price. It was clearly ahead of the others I considered at the time using my own weighting of those factors:

RSX, TSX, 350z, rx8, is300

I hate to say it but i almost fell into the S. I was looking for something fun. A friend of mine has a Miata and I seriously thought about it. But I was sure that my better half would say no way. Well we talk about it and she says anything but a Miata. "No problem honey" and I started looking. Well I have another friend and he has a Miata also and we go for a drive. It was okay but at the bar he says "I wish I would have gotten a S2000". I start looking for one and there is one locally. Very clean and the colors that I wanted. I test drive it and have it looked at and a carfax later and I buy it.

One of the many reasons why I love my wife. I drive it most of the time but every once in a while she just says "I am going for a drive". It's below 6K for her but thats okay. And you can tell when she gets home she says to herself "thank god he didn't get a Miata"

The S is not for everyone, Honda did not intend it for everyone, but it is for me. Even bone stock, I sense the influence of Ayrton Senna, for that I'm glad.

That's the thing with this car. Nothing too impressive until you get in one.
