Question Idiot 16yr old crashes 2004 S2000

So here I am... back at home... hanging out with my younger brother for his birthday. (he's home from college as well).

We decide to go out and hit some of the local S curves and he begins to tell me a story... one of which happened last weekend:

"Do you remember Scott B------ from High School?"... I'm like "yeah... I graduated with 90 kids, remember?"... "Did you know his younger brother?". "No, I really did not... I just knew that those two kids were spoiled biatches... got more handed to them then Ricky Shroeder in Silver Spoons.... I also remember mom telling me that the younger brother (approx. 10 years younger then Scott- who is 2 younger then me) got a 2004 S2000 for his 16th Birthday "

My Brother continues; "well... I was just told that he was racing down F--- street last weekend... trying to show off for some friends. A squirrel... yes a ing SQUIRREL popped out in front of him... the kid freaked out... tried to swurve to miss a SQUIRREL... lost control of the car at that speed... and wrapped it around a damn tree. He's 'ok' I guess... but the car is ing totaled... brand new too"

I say, "Jesus... THAT is why you do NOT give a 16yr old kid a $35k car."

Seriously... what are parents thinking!?? I know there are a select few kids out there who are competant enough to know what they are doing. But EVERY kid I ever knew growing up.... who got a Mustang GT, or a crotch rocket, or a SS for their 16th birthday... as their first car... totaled it within a couple years... if not the FIRST fricken week they had the damn car (which happened to TWO different people I know!! ) One kid... ended up dead by his Junior year- on the crotch Rocket... and another one my brother's age died as well...

I worked my way into a 70 Cutlass with a Rocket 350 in it... and its a good thing that the car was disquised as a boat... b/c the shit I pulled off in it... I shouldn't be here either...

It's going to be dam tough rationalizing giving my kid something fast for his first car...

Cliff Notes provided by Legal Bill

Thread Summary

As a public service I thought I'd try to save others the agony of reading this thread just to learn if someone else has already made the point they were thinking of before adding to it.

The thread can be broken down into three dominant points by three distinct groups as follows.

1. People who got free cars from their parents:

"I deserve a free car cause mommy and daddy are rich and I did some of the things I had to do anyway, so who cares." (Most of the posts from this group are horribly misspelled and hard to read yet somehow the authors all did well in school. I guess English wasn't a required course for them.)

A minor sub group are adults who got a free car from mommy and daddy and want to buy one for their own kids too. They don't really make a different point, they are just trying to justify their own childhood experience.

2. People who bought their own cars:

"People who get free cars from mommy and daddy just for doing what they had to do anyway are loosers, because they won't understand the value of hard work." (Most of these posts lack any statistical support and kinda sound like the comments my mother used to make when she was telling me why she wasn't going to buy me a car when I was a kid.)

A significant sub-argument made by this group is that the members of group 1 above are a public menace as they cannot control the cars they have been given.

3. People who are wondering about the squirrel: "Is the squirrel ok? What's the squirrel's name. Did you ever see that insurance commercial with two squirrels?"

An insignificant subgroup has begun a dialog about cats, Moose and deer and the proper technique for running over small animals.

Mods: Please move this post to the top of the thread. It will save other's countless man hours. I consider this my public service to S2Ki for the week.

Your Humble servant,

Bill

That's nothing. My first car was a 1984 Datsun/Nissan Sentra with a diesel engine. 59hp, 70lb-ft of torque. Now that's just stupid fast! Once I graduated high school, I worked my way into a 1988 Accord DX coupe. 96hp and 110 lb-ft of torque. It wasn't until I graduated college that I got a car w/ triple-digit hp ratings, a brand-new 2000 Prelude.

[rant]
Lemme tell ya, if I ever have kids, they're all going to start in a car w/ less than 150hp. A Civic DX (used, even) is more than enough car for any kid in high school. I don't understand parents that buy their kids BMWs and Vettes and S2000s. I don't care how smart or how well-behaved a kid is, there is no way that they have done anything to earn a car like that when they are in high school. And even if they had, they just don't need a car like that. Giving a 16 year old kid a $30-50K car is just going to skew their perception of reality. What happens to that kid when they go out into the real world and have to buy their own car? Unless Mommy & Daddy keep throwing money at them, or unless they are fortunate enough to graduate college with a kick-ass high-paying job, then they are either going to have to "downgrade" to a lesser car, or get into an assload of debt just to maintain their current status.
I like the way I've done things. Start with the biggest POS I can find, and then upgrade a little each time I buy a new car, that way I feel like I've actually accomplished something. But maybe that's just me.

2004 S2000 for a 16 year old is nothing... I know someone who gave gave his 16 year old son a new 2004 Ferrari 360 Modena for his birthday. Now thats pure insanity!!

I did know a guy who got a new Dodge Viper for his 16th... the family had 10 houses across the US and owned a bunch of hotels though... so he traveled so much... that he never even drove it...
