If you had to do it all over again...
I would do it again.
Let's see, it was September 2000 and I only had to decide between waiting a few months for an ordered 2001 or somehow find a black 2000 (which was hard since all I ever saw were silverstone). I really wanted the first year. The next decision was pay a 'market value adjustment' markup ($4000) or pass on the car. We talked them down $1000. Seat locks weren't an issue since seats were not a big theft target yet.
If it was my daily driver I would probably not be happy with it. That being said, its almost 12 years later and I still love it.

I made mistakes prior to owning this car, buying FWD hatchbacks and messing around with modding them, etc. I learned a lot along the way so when it was decided the s2k was the best car for me I took my time. I researched the car, was patient and pounced when the time was right. This is the first car I have owned where I can't look back and said I should have done something different. Buying this car was a year in the making before I actually bought it and many years of learning about cars to realize what is special to me.
I can say honestly, I should have bought one years ago but live and learn.

I wish I had done more research.
I would have stayed with an AP1 but I would have gotten a 2003 instead.
Which meant I would have gotten all the first gen fixes including a glass rear window instead of the crappy plastic one on my 2001.
I also ended up buying a car with the well known axle issue and had to replace both axles.
Overall though I happy with my car.

I love my 2001 as is, but I do wish I had at least gotten a 2002. Researching more would have been a great idea...
would not have changed anything on my 2001 purchase. I would have not leased my 2006 Passat, should have gone without the new car and kept the $$ to get a C/R while I was working at the dealerhip Could have bought for $2500 under invoice(dealer incentive $$). Highensight is always 20/20
In some ways yes, I would keep my original S... I liked having the on the go soft top option.
However, I upgraded to a CR this year after having no S for 4 years. I think I would stick with the CR at this point over the base I had originally purchased.
