Default Inexpensive hp upgrades

ok guys im new to this forum but so far very impressed with the info I've seen shared in these threads. I have a simple question. I purchased mys2k two months ago and love it but now im looking to increase the hp a little. I hope to get a comptech sc in the future but cant go for the bucks just yet. so far ive added a AEM cold air intake that sounds great but im not sure if its done much performance wise. i spoke to a few companies about exhausts and came to the conclusion that for about $2400 (header, exhaust , and testpipe) i might see gaines of 7-9hp. thats alot of $ for very little gain. I also looked into purchasing a chip and didnt get much of a possitive respone. help me out guys what should be my first few steps. I also would like to know if i purchase a SC in the future do i have to change anything else or is just bolt it on and away we go?

any advice as to how i can crawl before i walk would be geatly appreciated.

Vortech and Comptech are both around 4000 dollars, give or take, and they are bolt on, but you can tune it even farther with VAFC or EMS or something.

take the spare tire out. Intake, exhaust, headers. Personally i would save up a grand or so and buy 4.44 gears.

Sometimes it's best just to leave things as they are

balance is the key!

There is NO "chip" for this car. You have to replace the complete ECU or add on a VAFC. Tuning can be a nightmare and may not be compatible with whatever S/C you end up with.
Sounds to me what you have already done is about as good as it gets except for the suggestion of the final drive gears (4.44 or 4.77). If you intend to S/C, then go with 4.44 as 4.77's will be too much. Also, with the S/C in mind, a good header and a cat back system will help even though these will do little for you now.

Unfortunatly I have no knowledge of how you would perform in the 0~60 mph and the 1/4 mile catagory.

Depending on how you tune it, VAFC might net you 10-15 HP.
Another member here did a comparison test "before and after" 4.44 gears. He was getting something like .4 - .5 sec better in 0-60. Expect this in the 1/4 although I don't recall seeing any numbers.
Top end? Yes and no! Understand that the stock cannot achieve the calculated top speed of 166 mph anyway. Most report 150 is all it will do on the level. Putting 4.44's in will reduce the calculated top speed to about 153 mph. With the power "multiplication" characteristics of these gears, that top speed may actually be reachable.

ps. The "search" function will give you lots of answers to your upcoming questions.

sounds like the gears make a big difference..approx. what is the cost involved and does it have any effect on my warranty.

also does anyone know the answer to the VAFC question re. hp gains on s2k with aem cai?
