Please *don't* launch your cars. You guys think you're recommending something safe to other owners, but you're not. This is not something that you should be recommending to people.
Original poster, the S isn't a great drag car in stock form. If you're actually worried about parts breaking because you need/want to launch your car, you shouldn't buy an S2000.

Try to secure a demo S for a day. I was already negotiationg for an 07 when my brother finally acknowledged that he no longer enjoyed the fact that he has phyically outgrown the abililty to just slide in and out of the car and he really is too big for the seat to enjoy any comfort.
Another potential issue that you may find troublesome is the obscured view of signal lights when you are the first or even second car to take off when the light turns green. The combination of the top of the windshield also comprising the support for the soft top forms a visual barrier that obstructs one's visual of lights that hang from the middle of the intersection unless you lean forward to enhance your angle of view to monitor the light. I am only 6'0' and 190 lbs and I experience this annoyance daily. Maybe with the top down, you could see over the windshield.
Good luck
Best of luck.

Red, there's no official stance, and I don't object at all to folks talking about any driving behavior regarding the car.
That said, several posters earlier on were basically recommending launches without discussing the risk to the car. If the OP goes off and starts beating on this car thinking the differential or the tranny is bulletproof, he'll be sorely mistaken.
I just want reality made clear to folks. Sounds like the OP understands this.
A few months ago, a young woman in Toronto loaned her S2000 to her boyfriend who proceeded to do doughnuts and burnouts. He broke her car. He'd gotten the impression from the local community that it was "OK" to do this stuff. Bah!
Again, I don't care if people want to talk about launches, burnouts, or getting 10 feet of air... I just want people aware of the price THEY are going to have to pay. If they go whining to Honda that their car is glass, we all suffer.

I think the reliability of a car has an inverse square relationship with how many mods you make.
My S is stock, and purchased when it had 8k miles on it even though it is an '01. Previous owner seems to have not driven it much and had it parked up quite a bit (never a good thing for a thoroughbred). He also ran it off the road and damaged the front left, not sure how bad, but I don't see any adverse affects from it.
When I first got it, a month later it would not start. Turned out to be a broken connector associated with the imobilizer, probably related to the off/fix.
Since that, the only problem I had with it was the 055 clutch replacement thing - the garage who did it did not grease the release bearing thing and I had the sticky clutch problem since then, a problem I still have today but will be fixed next week.
I have raced against much more powerful cars on a track, usually Evo's with all sorts of mods. Though they are faster in the straights, they have nothing on me in the twisties, absolutely nothing. But best of all, few of them can go more than a few laps before something in them breaks (they are all modded). And me and my stock S keeps going lap after lap like the energizer bunny.
This car is awesome, and stock for stock, it would keep up and/or surpass much "better" machinery. I have not regretted this purchase once. Do yourself a favor..... get one!

Once the weather clears (currently snowing) Ill talk to the dealer. I doubt they will let me drive the car for a day not without a contract on buying the car....But never the less I will try.
thanks again for all the info and warrnings.
