So I decided to put in the K40 that has been sitting in my garage for months. It is an undetectable unit with laser. Both pickups were mounted up front, dead center with the laser pickup between the new horn and the radar pickup.
To get thru the firewall, I took out the battery and drilled a hole behind it for a grommet, and the K40 wiring.
I mounted the K40 control head under the dash, below the starter button. It is far enough from my left knee that I will not hit it. This is before I cleaned up all the wiring.
I covered the small piezo ( speaker ) with some speaker cloth, and mounted it with the warning led on the driver side pillar. I wasn't happy with positioning of these, so I have another pillar piece coming so I can remount these.
With the bumper back on everything is barely visible, the radar module has to have a clear view forward, the radar pickup can be behind plastic.
I also installed the front spoiler I bought ages ago while I was at it.
The radar is great, I wanted a stealth look and good protection so the K40 was perfect. When the new pillar cover comes tomorrow, I am going to remount the led and piezo with the led on top, and the piezo lower.
Try placing the piezio more "around the corner" on the pillar so if faces the windshiled more. This would be even more "stelth."
Are you planning to leave the LED so high on the pillar? If you lower down closer to the dash it might look more like an alarm LED in case you DO get stopped by the police.
Why did you drill a new hole through the firewall? There is a lot of room through the other grommet in your picture. I put 4ga power wire through that (which is about the size of the wire you used WITH the loom on it.) I believe there is also a similat grommet on the drivers side. This would be even closer to where you mounted the control box.
Overall a very clean and nice install. I was considering one of those, but it was a little pricey for me at the time (I was looking at having it installed, but if I were to do it today, I would install myself too.)
The piezo and led need to be as close as possible to my line of sight. The piezo is almost facing me which makes it the most audible, and is covered with gray speaker cloth so it is not visible. The led is going to be mounted from behind the panel, rather than from the front, so it will not stick out so much. I am also going to switch their positions so the led is further up on the pillar, and more visible. These are very hard to see from anywhere but the drivers seat, so you will not see them unless you are looking for them. The pillar is actually quite restrictive with mounting locations because it sits flat on the metal under it.
I got my new cover yesterday and got everything finished today. With the led mounted from behind the piece it is almost flush and looks ten times better now. You would never know I have a radar detector.
