I know this may be a bit far-fetched, but has anyone thought of or attempted gutting the stock mufflers and making your own "fart-can" or glasspack style muffler?

Would definitely give a different sound, be somewhat lighter, and would look totally stock....no hassle from cops!

my initial thought on taking the resonator out is that the sound might not be deep/throaty but a little more buzzy... i guess i am wrong on that.. that would seem to be the most inexpensive way.
Does droning come entirely from the mufflers or a combination of piping and mufflers?
If done at a reputable shop there is no buzziness. I did this a few months back on a whim and was pleased with the sound. Basically there is more bass in the midrange with more of an idle burble. VTEC is more pronounced and overall louder. There is maybe a slight drone when cruising, but no buzziness whatsoever.

I cut the pipes after the "Y" and put new cans on. Sound is exactly what I wanted and I like how it looks. I won't get a full system until I go FI.

There is absolutley no buzzing from removing the resonator. It deepens the tone a bit and it is much louder about 6K; everything below is nearly stock sounding. There is a little growl at idle too which is something I've always liked to have.

I am ybe WAY off base here, but I thought that there engines were designed with a certain amount of back-pressure included. I thought you only really needed a High-Flowing exhaust if you were FI, or had re-programmed the A/F ratio, and had to get rid of more air. The stock exhaust system is already pretty high-flow (thus minimal gains). I think you would really see the gains for and aftermarket exhuast (something like a comptech with 2 pipes after the mid-muffler instead of the stock single split at the rear axle) if you were force induction, and had extra air to move.

Please let me know if this is an incorrect assumption (engines designed (N/A) with certain back-pressure amounts already included as a matter of performance).

I had a good local shop cut my stock pipes after the Y split and add a flange. I also had them make me a custom straight pipe application that I can bolt on at the flange and swap out with my stock mufflers for track days. My initial hope was just to be super loud at track days and save a few pounds since the stock cans are so heavy.

The straight pipes can be loud, but mellow out at high RPM's. My friend's single straight pipe is way louder. I had the car dynoed with both the stock and the straight pipe setup and since it only takes about 10 minutes to swap them out, I was able to do it in the same conditions. After the results were up, I found that I lost 1hp with the straight pipes over stock exhaust. So, it would make sense that a little back pressure would benefit the car. How much, I have no idea. However, since saving 40lbs on the track is probably better than a 1hp gain, I came out ahead.

Magnaflows are OEM Comptech and Spugen... won't give you Fartcan sound. Save your money by cutting off the deadweight/restrictive stock muffs and then get a decent header/testpipe

Some weight info

Stock mufflers 20 lbs each => 40 lbs.
Stock resonator => 15 lbs
Stock CAT => 14 lbs
total => 69 lbs

Magnaflow mufflers 8 lbs each => 16 lbs
T1R testpipe => 5 lbs
resonator replacement pipe => 5 lbs
total => 26 lbs

Judicious ebay and for sale thread buys is the secret

The car came with the GT3 rims and I got a steal at $18000 including tax and license.

My list adds up to an additional $7100 since I do all my own labor, so yes it is a expensive toy but I think I am coming to an end to all the small stuff you can buy for it without going full body kit, SC, and 4.56 pumpkin.

I just got a new Rick's header off the 4sale thread today so that is bumping up the bottom line another 675. Now it is pretty much where I want it.

I was waiting for this thread to come around. I paid about 23 bucks for one muffler off of ebay. I took a picture of the spugen single exhaust, took it to the local exhaust shop, and told them I wanted it to look identical. They did so, and only charged me 20 bucks to do it. So alltogether, I paid 43 bucks and whatever the Ricks outlet cover costs; I can't remember. BTW, it looks damn near identical to the original spugen and I saved big $$$'s.
