r u talking about modified 996's? (if u r then that is completely irrelevant) r u talking about turbo's? proper 996? im just talking about a stock 996 compared to a stock s2k, on the track im sure they are not so spread apart as you say they are
Well, you mentioned racing, lap times, etc., so let's talk about proper racing.

The 911 that is most often used in series racing is the GT3 Cup, RS, etc., and yes, there was no shortage during the 996 gen. These regularly wipe the floor with the competition, day in, day out, sprint or 24 hours. An S2000 wouldn't stand a chance, period.

What do you mean by "stock 996", anyway? A C2? That would still beat an S2000 in every test. The 911 is nothing to scoff at, whether or not you like the 996 fascia, whether or not they're common.

^^Just curious, why you went with a C4S living in Houston, TX? I'm close to Austin and had the same (in 997 variant) and the AWD was reassuring when it rained almost everyday last summer!
I was seduced by the arse!

Actually, the sport suspension, bigger brakes, and widebody were bigger factors in the decision - much more so than the AWD. Although after having a Audi 3.0Q A4, I certainly appreciate the AWD during those torrential Texas rain storms. The traction on the C4s is just unreal! I've taken off-ramps at 80mph without even noticing.

The 997 C4S is even more incredible. My dad had a 997 C4s cab - beautiful. Why did you get rid of yours?

My family owned a 997 C4 which I drove as my only car for period of time. To me, it's more of a Gran Turismo platform rather than a pure sports car. It excels nicely as a GT, but does not have the nimbleness of a S2000. I can't imagine tearing through Mulholland Raceway in a 997. My family also had a Boxster, and while underpowered, it felt more like a sports car. I know the 996 and 997 aren't the same, but they have a similar philosophy.

Would love to take a Cayman for a spin.

sadly,

i seem to encounter more of people who think it's just a torqueless honda.
and when i try to reason with them about... you know... turns, twisties... whatever you want to call them, they just look at me like, "so?"

haha. it's okay. let them hate. it's our car to enjoy anyway.

Where I live there seems to be an influx of "kids" granted I'm only 24 LOL!. Mostly 16-20 that simply just want hp and don't care/understand about a well balanced car like the S. Jumping into SRT 4, Cobalt SS, MS3 etc... Don't get me wrong those are and have the potential of being very fast cars. But I myself would rather have a well balanced car w/ power and handling.

P.S. I've taken a couple of those "kids" for rides in the S and educated them about the car

I just decided to free up some liquid. The C4S was an amazing car though, fairly low maintenance at that. I remember taking a turn on a twisty my previous modified E36 would feel like a jelly bean suspension on and the C4S carved through like nothing. It is good to hear you have another car as a DD, with the Porsche as a DD it didn't feel as special as when I had a TSX/S2000 combo, where the S2000 felt like a go-kart coming from a TSX. In hindsight, while throughly enjoying the C4S I wondered what it would be like to have the power package, GT3 or Turbo, damn Porsche for giving so many outstanding options, and putting so many hot gold diggers into my life during ownership.

I have driven a 993/996 for quite some time now and they drive and handle beautifully. The torque is awesome and the braking is superb. I have the 08 CR and I have to say they are two different beasts. I feel like the porsche is a nicer and more comfortable daily driver, but the cons make me love the s2k a lot more. Porsche = undeniably unreliable. The friggen things leaked oil, tranny failures, horrendous gas mileage, tonnes of coil consumed, electrical problems, almost every bushing worn in suspension (just to name a few). Now, I have not had my CR for long enough to say it is relaible or doesn't suffer from those problems, but in the 8 years of production so far, the cars seem near bulletproof. I do not have the time, nor the desire to take the Porsche to the dealership for service/repair which is why I purchased the CR over a 996 c4s.

If it were only about the nameplate, power, prestige and handling I would go with Porsche. Since I want to add relaibility into the equation, the s2k wins hands down! I find that the CR reminds me very much of how the 993 used to drive and handle.

To me the only way to upgrade to a better sports car would be to get a 911 which usually tend to be twice if not three times the price of an s2000.

You can get a nice 996 in the $30k's. Not much more than a new S2k.
