Some of the knocks that the 996 gets results mostly from being the first water-cooled Porsche. The 993 guys hate on it because they think they're the last "true" Porsche...
If you think the 996 is not a good car, you haven't driven one. If so, you're opinion is meaningless. The fact is the air-cooled motors, for all their nostalgic smells and noises, had their days numbered. The 996 was new ground for Porsche and we're all better off for it. Yes, there were teething pains, such as RMS, etc. But frankly, the 993's have their own share of issues as well (valve guide failure?)
It's easy to dismiss those who love the 996 as "wannabees." You're missing out on a great car if that's your attitude.

Its not just about the water/air cooled debate. Its about a lot of things including the driving experience to the shape of the car -Look at the headlights of the 911, look at the shape change from 993-996-997, you see how they corrected the mistake in 996s? and went back to their roots in the 997s in the shape and headlights? You ever wonder why 993s are selling for higher than 996s?
You guys can google all you want, you may or may not find the right reasons, the fact remains that 996s were not the highlight of the of 911 model years. Attend any porsche meet or event and you'll hear the same.

But then, 996s are indeed less raw than 997s, much like how AP1 owners complain about AP2s.

As far as the why the 993 has higher resale, it has MUCH to do with the water vs air cooled debate. Again, many see the 993 as the last of the "true" Porsche's and are willing to pay the premium for that among other uniquely 993 attributes. I'll be the first to admit that the 993 is a better-looking car (in a classic sense) than the 996. However, dismissing the 996 as some sort of non-Porsche is ridiculous...IMHO.

I'm not debating that point. No one ever said the 996 was the pinnacle. However, your last post suggests that lovers of the 996 are "fan boi's." That's simply not the case. There are many Porsche aficionado's who like the 996 for what it is.

A porsche afficionado will never be a 996 fan boi. Its like an oxymoron. Go to the porsche forums and you'll see.
[QUOTE=Nine,Jul 18 2008, 02:49 PM] I'm sorry but a porsche afficionado will never love a 996 911 because it wears the face of a boxter -not a 911.

"LOL I know the 996 is a better car"
wtf, hmmm, does anyone know any lap times or races including s2000's vs 996's? im pretty sure the 996 isnt a whole lot better (if at all)...and definitely not from a cost vs. what u get standpoint...
from autotrader "Standard Carrera models also produce plenty of excitement, roaring off the line strongly and smoothly, reaching 60 mph in 5.6 seconds"
^ ya thats in a whole nother league compared to the s2k lol, and we havent even touched handling
Porsche is better than Honda, ya ok
Simple answer (for the most part)----if your old get a porsche, young get an S...
ugh i hate these "this car is better than that threads"
