From what I've read (about everything accessible on the web), all of the clear bras are about 8 mils thick and made from basically the same vinyl base.
Are you sure about that? That's well over a quarter inch thick, and I haven't noticed the clear film being that thick on cars. I have seen it that thick when applied to stationary windows and such for security purposes.

I bought a 3m kit off ebay and installed it myself. Front bumper was a pain - involved stretching the material but this was noted up front. You simply cannot wrap a flat sheet of paper onto the bumper and not expect a few areas of stretching.

It's been two weeks since the shop installed the 3M Expel clear mask. Their particular pattern doesn't cover 100% of the front bumper which is a bit of a let down. I've order (from 3M) additional strips that I'll apply this weekend. Standing approx. 2 meters away and you lose sight of it unless the lighting is perfect. I had heard too that the clear mask would magnify any blemishes in the paint. It's true as several previously almost invisible places are now more prominent, but to anyone unfamiliar with the surface they'll miss them. Overall, I'm 95% pleased with the protection and 99% pleased with the looks. Finally, my best recommendations are to get a pro to install it and to avoid the InvisibleMask products.

Mine had a clear bra on it when I bought it. It was pretty much flawless.

After an Interstate encounter with a semi tire tread I had to have my front bumper and driver side fender refinished. A replacement bra was installed as part of this repair. The fitment was not as good...particularly around the apex of the headlights and at the bottom of the front bumper piece.

I don't know what brands were involved so I can't offer much advise on that score. But it does support Ray's point that not all these kits are created equal.
