I agree with S2kRob. The marginal torque gain was in direct response to complaints of no torque from people who had no real experience with a high-reving engine (die-hard accord owners, ect.), and this is their pacifier.

20 more hp and 20 more ft lbs and now we're on to something. If not, like I said, what's the point?

Very good point Sbeal - my bet is the 2.2 litre engine was introduced in North America precisely so they could put in an automatic.

North America has the highest percentage of cars with auto gearboxes - in other markets a manual sportscar is preferred.

Guess what guys, they're turning the NA S2000 into a hairdressers car!

Sbeall,

Here is a quote from S2ki member Woodwork who has driven 7 '04's already.

"There are small differences between a stock '03 and stock '04."

"The gearing and the torque together are very evident when driving for the first time."

If you look at the torque and horsepower graph you see that there is more horsepower and torque at every part of the rev range, besides 8-9k.

We'll see if there is any tradeoff between more power and the higher RPM once someone can drive it around the track.

In short: the 2200 was made only to "please" the North American market.

Subaru did the same with the STI

In US is a 2.5L 300hp and in Europe is a 2.0L 265hp

to the whiners on this thread. If you don't like the 04, don't buy it, plain and simple! The world won't end with the demise of the 9,000 rpm redline. I swear, some of you people sound like whiny little 4 year olds who have had their cookies taken away from them.. Be happy with your S2000 and shut the F$#$ up..

The Japanese press confirms what the Honda dealer told me: the 2200 engine is only for export to North America.

The JDM MY2004 will be offered for sale from October 9.

How about you check your pretencious self at the starting gate. Who the hell are you to assume what qualifies driving skill? People don't HAVE to run around orange cones on weekends to qualify for an S2000 key fob nor do they have to spend $200 at every opportunity to appease your silly rating system for '04 pontification. I've attended not one, not two but THREE high performance driving schools in my lifetime (two in Italy when I lived there) and have taken those automobiles up to speeds of 175mph but did not have any local race track in my state of Vermont I recently left so, according to you, I'm not qualified to comment on the '04 because I haven't "taken it to a track." Despite the fact this is my 23rd sportscar? Or that I began driving rear wheel, front-engine platforms in 1976?
very very well said.

The '04 in my opinion is getting a bit watered down. The sway bars are being reduced in size and all. I'm sure the spring rates might also go down. All this because some american car sponsored mag called car and driver kept ranking on the no torque and "too stiff for city driving" s2000. So honda of america gave in and "watered" it out so to speak. But the 40% stronger rear end seems promising for a swap into my 04.
I really think Car and Driver needs to get out of Corvette's ass even though they're shoved so far deep in it.

I believe the only difference in the US version is the engine. AHM actually gave their engine more power. How is that watered down?

What I want to know is what tranny will Japan (and Europe) get--the current version or the 04 tranny with different ratios?
