My dad bought me a s2k before I even had a drivers license...lol. I was taking behind the wheel and I was getting dropped off at my house and when I told them the S was my car they were shocked. This was about 7 years ago. I still have S and I plan to keep it forever.

If you want to learn what the car is capable of, and yourself, sign up for an autocross the the spring. When I was your age, I wsa very focused on driving, and thought of myself as a good driver. When I did my first autocross, I realized what driving really is. I still remember the first ever run I did, and by the end of the day, I had taken over 12 seconds off of my first time(on a 60 second course). It really gave me a sense of what driving a car at it's(and it's tires') limits. I laugh thinking about how I thought I knew what "spirited" driving was like, and that I thought I knew how to handle a car..

I'm not much older now(22), but here I am with my S and I am glad I took the time to become a better driver. Treat it with respect is the biggest thing, don't underestimate what it can do.

Welcome to s2ki where everyone is better in all aspects of life based solely on their age.
Anyways on topic, it's just a car, don't let it run your life. I just sold mine after moving from the Dallas area to Tucson and my current car has already been scraped against and door dinged, luckily Bertone made the plastic take most of the light damage on the Volvo 780.
What I learned having the s2000 as my first car, having collision and theft is a good idea. Someone hit and ran from hitting my s2000 probably at 5 mph, but it completely dented in the passenger side fender and broke the bumper's clip.
If a car keeps you awake at night then its not worth owning until you have a house, a garage, and money to waste on an alarm is my logic. You shouldn't be too worried about the wheels getting stolen, your main concern with this car is getting the top ripped and seats stolen for someone's civic.
In high school for parking, me and a couple of my friends with mustangs would all park in reverse in the back row to protect each other, get to school early for parking and chill for about 20 minutes before class every day. The only time I "checked" my car was when we all went out for lunch or went home. If something happens you'll quickly learn you're out of luck in high school.
One time a newer civic clearly parked way over the line and door dinged me, it was my senior year so I got off early so I got the local PD who camped out on campus in his truck to come over and he said the only way the local PD could do anything is if the kid came out and opened up the door and it lined up, and the office would have none of that so I just had to live with it. He said he didn't have jurisdiction on private property unless there was clear evidence.
I was more worried about my car when it wasn't at school, and with good reason. It was safer on school grounds during the day then lying around the city day/night.

How would we know? You don't even mention what school or town. Even if you did, a lot of us would still have no idea.

Park away from others or in a post where there's only one car on one side. Other than that, I don't worry about it. That's what insurance is for. No point living in constant fear IMO. This is a common discussion topic -- there are plenty of existing threads you can refer to.

There are no guarantees in life either way. You take whatever measures you're willing to deal with to mitigate the risks but that's really all you can do.

We don't know you. You're not being bashed on. You're getting responses because of the typical younger drivers out there who all also said "I'm not some dumb idiot" or similar... Regardless, you don't have to be a "dumb idiot" to total your car.

Spend some time on the track or autocrossing to get to know the S. Everyone should do so regardless of age.

I'm 32, I have had my S2K for 7 years now and I'm still learning a lot. The OP lives near me, in fact he will be attending his first meet this Thursday, which I will be picking him up in my S. We have a pretty strong community here and most if not all of us are pretty responsible, we will do our best to guide and educate. As far as getting vandalized or anything like that is pretty unlikely around here, I leave my car unlocked and even top down when I go to malls, grocery stores or any large public places and have never had anything happen. If you have ppl that are jealous or have enemies of course the risk will go up. Most peoples comments are based because of your age, which 90% of the time is understandable, so just prove them wrong, take precautions and be safe.

Good luck with the new S man! Get locking seats for sure! It's cheaper to just buy a new top if yours gets slashed and they figure out they can't steal your seats, instead of them slashing your top and stealing your seats as well. Like the other guy said too, join an autocross so you can learn to drive your car better, it will help you our a lot in the long run!
