In the short time I drove the car, to me the whine was gone. I think with the radio off a stock diff makes just as much noise as the 4.56 diff at cruisin speeds. It's just that you are more focused on trying to hear something when you are in a car with gears. BJ's car is stock except for the diff and for those of you who have an exhaust on the car you won't hear a thing.
This was the first car I have driven with the new gears and I can tell you that gear noise is not a factor with these. So if you where on the fence about doing this mod, DO IT. BUT make sure you have either Rick's or Hardtopguy set the diff up for you. The installer makes ALL the difference in the world. Trust me I know after fixing countless 4.57 bad gear installs from "local experts".

BJ, Enjoy your new mod.
Yup I am enjoying this mod a lot! I've gone out driving 4 times already to run errands just for the opportunity to get in the car some more to enjoy them.

I think the fact that people listed that the old 4.57's wined, it's making people parinoid that these 4.56 would sound the same.

Here's an analogy: I'm guessing the 4.57 is like a snore and the 4.56 is like normal breathing. No mather what, someone will still say they can hear breathing. The word wine has a bad connotation that it must be loud and annoying, which is not the case here. Sorry if I'm making it sound that way, but kinda along the lines of what Jeff is saying, this "sound" is present because we are focusing our ears to hear something. Definatly if you have any other mods, radio on, CAI, etc... you would not hear a thing.

Anyhow... on my 4th errand run tonight, WOOW!!! fun fun. Cruzin at 40 mph I downshifted to 3rd and pressed on the gas and accelerated to pass a car in front of me, Vteced and to it to 8000 rpms, I had to quickly apply the brakes after passing because I found myself going too fast.

i agree that the word whine is not positive. the sound is only there for a brief length and with a good stereo system, it's not even an afterthought. it is certainly not a factor to not get the gears. the positives outweight the neg 100 to 1 imo.

BJ, give the gear some time to break in... but not too much time

You're scaring me with those words.!!!
You know,it is not always possible,or practical to have the install done by either one of you guys.!!!
Is this install, beyond the competences of a qualified mechanic???

Qualified mechanic? There is a differance between building a motor and building a diff. Many have built motors, fewer have built diff. Also it is an older skill that has been replaced with transaxle service. Most techs can change a part or assembly, but to take an assembly apart and put it back together right, that is not common. Heck as a rule Honda only swaps the rear diff as an assembly. It is because of this that we say find the right installer. So you should be able to tell if the installer can isntall them. If they can install ring and pinions for other cars then they can do this. If they need the book for directions, find another.

You can find installers all over the place. I found one in Nashville, TN when I needed to get a bad gear replaced (old 4.44 that was not heat treated properly) So if you look, they can be found. But I will tell you this, of the installers I know about, most of them are in the fourty. (I am sure there are others that are younger) My guess it that they learned the skills long ago when the cars where mainly RWD.

Just call around (if you live in a city) and if the tech needs any pushing to do the work at all, find another. don't tell him what car you have, becasue they will not know what it is. Just tell them you have a 7", 10 bolt ring gear and uses a crush sleeve pinion installation. If he knows what you are talking about, you are on the right track. In the city of Houston, TX (4th largest in the US) I found one installer.

You went ahead and did it... congrats man. I still love my gears but there is no doubt that the 4.57's whine. I'd like to hear the difference with the 4.56's.

Thank's Jeff,

Congrats!
"bubbling with anticipation" nice way to put it. Hang in there... after some solo drives around familiar roads I was cheering and having a blast. I imagine you will have the same results.
