The best solution I have found to date is Peppermint Oil.

http://www.amazon.com/Peppermint-Oil-4-oz-...28151097&sr=8-1

Be careful with this stuff, if you get it on your skin, wash it off quickly, and DO NOT get it anywhere even close to your eyes!

I take 3 washed out tuna fish cans, put 3 or 4 cotton balls in each can, put 2 to 3 drops of oil on each cotton ball, put 1 can on each side of the floor in front of the seats and one can in the trunk.

Since doing this I have had zero problems with mice. Mothballs are nasty, they work but the lingering odor is just not bearable.

If you do some searching on google you will find peppermint oil is a common option for people trying to manage rodents, our cars though make it perfect because the space is enclosed and the peppermint smell can remain concentrated.

I actually think the fake owls keep the rodents totally out of the area, day or night.
I don't...

I put traps in each corner of the garage, my thought is that if they are there they will get hungry and I am bound to start catching them.
I used to use traps, but on a fluke I tried something new, and I was rather amused by the fact that they walked right past the traditional traps to get to the something new.

I now use poison bait, and the kind I like the best is the kind you nail down to a board. The pellets are a waste because they horde them and then forget to eat them. The nailed down bait they have to eat on the spot so you can see if it is being hit upon or not.

I almost bought those, but I was afraid they would die and start to stink before I found them.

just leave a hungry cat in the garage...problem solved.
This is truely the most effective solution. The cat doesn't even need to be all that hungry. They will usually hunt the mice for pleasure.

LOL, is that opinion based on experience?

We had five "incidents" where our cars were damaged (four cases of chewed wiring, and one case of nuts stored in the Lexus airbox) before the owls, but they stopped as soon as we placed the decoys, and the squirrls don't even raid our bird feeder anymore.

Not going to happen, trust me.
The poison causes them to dehydrate, so after they eat the stuff they basically leave the building in search of water, well that is as long as your storage place is good and dry.
In all the years I have used these I have never once found a dead body.

Nope, just complete and udder shock over a working solution that sounds so simple.
Hell, I might even try it...
