It is actually EASIER on your car if you take it above the 7k mark and keep it in the vtec, the wheels will spin a bit which is far better than slamming all the grip at say 6500 try it you will see that is is smoother, or just go to a canyon and drive the car in some twisties, most fun.

I thought turbo also depended on rpms higher than 3,000.

The revs needed with a turbo is dependent on the type of turbo i.e ball bearing etc.

Either way with the S I'm pretty sure that most aren't getting full boost this low.

You want to overcome the stick of the rear tires. If you drop the clutch at too low of an RPM, the tires don't break loose, the clutch does. The smoke you would generate from a burnout is in the clutch, not at the tires.

I take mine to the dragstrip as much as I take it to the road corse and auto-x and have found the opposite works better for me. My forst time at the drag strip I was a little nervous and launched at 4-4300 and got nothing but tire spin in first, second and part of third.(stock wheels and tires)
However anything under 3k and it will bog. I found myself getttin my best times from launching around 3500 with minimal tire spin and all high rpm shifts.
I cannot fathom launching in anything above 6k as I can imagine nothing will get accomplished, but engulfing the car in smoke...
With the SC install, many have suggested I use drag radials, however I will avoid that all together. Too much inertia to the pavement.
Hope this helps.
