Let's Solve the AP1 vs. AP2 Debate for Good
But not to fan any flames on this ridiculous thread

Owned a 05 ap2. The Ap1 has made me smile the most with all its nature. If I could pick one car, my heart would say ap1. My rational mind would say ap2. At the end of the day when the sun sets, and one is driving top down up the cherohala Skyway, s/he is just glad to be one of the chosen stewarts of an s2000. Oops- I just realized I am spending too much time thinking about this question instead of driving!
Lucky to have owned both cars at the same time. Started with an 06 back in 2010. Driving it up at the dragon and many other twisty roads. Did a tune, intake, exhaust, suspension, sway bars, alignment and square set up mods to the car for that type of driving. Then I found an 02 Spa for sale locally 4 years ago. This was an impulse buy to say the lease. First S2000 I saw at the dealership new back in 2001 so i bought it. Only mods was the square set up, alignment with intake and single exhaust to it. This car really taught me how to push the S2000 and made me change a couple of things on the 06 to make it more like the AP1. The lighter AP1 flywheel and clutch slave. Don't get me wrong both cars are freaking awesome to drive will put a smile of your face. I would say this about the two cars. The AP1 is a driver's car raw and very unforgiving. The AP2 is more refined and easier to drive, more creature comforts. Of course some would say its not the 04-05 AP2 but both cars are so close. One thing Honda did its homework and made a great car period. The Club Racer is the best of both worlds Later BD
let me bring this thread back. its a question i asked during the first Homecoming meet back in 2007 to the father of the S2000 and NSX, shigeru uehara.
AP1 vs AP2 question for the father of the S2K
AP1 vs AP2 question for the father of the S2K
The ap2 trans has a shorter equivalent gear ratio due to the primary gear drive in the first 4 gears compared to an ap1 trans, so its better suited for the lower trq and higher rev band of the ap1/f20 to get the best performance to the ground out of that engine. Alternatively the ap1 trans capitalizes on the F22 characteristics better. This is all based on trq output, rev band and mph in each gear to get the highest yield performance out of the combination. In hindsight Honda got the pairing wrong. That's not the only thing, there is a list. My point being, the best "performing" S2k is a Frankenstein. If Honda did it again, ideally they would barrow the best sum of parts from all the years and put it in one car, the CR got there part of the way but not all of the way. After 240k total miles and 14 years of ownership ive over time built the best combination in my opinion, starting with the 01 platform. 00-01 is the lightest out of the box.

This is another one of those dumb threads....
This topic has been debated literally thousands of times over the past 15 years since the AP2 was introduced in the fall of 2003.
Who really cares?
Both versions are great cars.
