Hey folks. I didn't do the "plate-flip-at-30mph" thang...but I did mount mine in the grill as well. Actually, I paid Coastal-Metals to do a pre-fab job when I purchased their powdercoated grill. I sent them my front plate & they trimmed down all the "unnecessary" boarder area so that I have the "core information" on my plate. Not as small as a european plate...but knocked ~ 1" off each side & 3/4" off top & bottom. Looks nice. Although I'm just now heading into my first season of summer with my S, I've yet to have it move past 3 bars -- and I've run the sh!t outta her occassionally . Not *great* pics, but I have a number of pics of my S and its grill within my sig -- click on "The Bruised Banana" for some pics if curious.
I tried this idea in December, 2000 or January 2001. I tried several versions of a trimmed plate including eventually trimming down the plate's sides, top and bottom to just show the numbers and sticker. Unfortunately I lost some of the pictures in the Photopoint fiasco.
This picture shows the plate trimmed to 5 1/4 inches top and bottom but before I trimmed the sides off and before I retrimmed the top and bottom to provide better air flow.
I did hit four bars on the temp gauge in May, 2001 driving into the Big Horns, at about 6,000 feet elevation, on an 85 or 90 deg day, doing high rpm-low gear twisties on the two-lane. When that happened, I clipped off the nylon ties holding the plate on and continued driving.
I never got stopped by law enforcement with the trimmed plate. The Wyoming law just says it has to be visible. We got new plates in Wyoming this year and I haven't trimmed the new one or mounted it.
I built a flip-up plate that fits inside the front grill. I used two 6 inch strap hinges available at any hardware store. It is mounted to the very top of the black grill, and flips up at between 15 and 20 MPH. It will only go back to about a 45 degree angle when it hits the AC condenser, but I have never seen over 3 bars regardless of where or how hard I am driving.
I do my best to minimize the effect on appearance, which is to mount the plate directly to the bumper without the bracket. The bumper has threaded holes which match the plate's holes exactly.
