Default Lousy Leather ??

With 2500 miles on my 2002 S2K the driver's seat leather looks pretty awful. The other side hasn't gotten much use yet.

It looked great, smooth and elegant, when I bought the car, but a little use has shown up heavy grain lines on one panel, wrinkles and lumps in the corners. It's comfortable, and it's not going to rip (I don't think) but it looks very 4th rate. Has anyone had this (small) problem and approached Honda about it ? Given what I've read about their warranty service they'd laugh.

I don't suppose there are after-market reupholstery kits with better quality leather, or are there ?

I think one of our sponsors in Aus is working on leather seat wraps but I think it's going to be quite expensive. The only solution that I can think of is to clean/condition regularly, this'll help hide the lines/creases. I have 2900 miles and my seat has tons of grey lines that are hideous.

Honda skimped on the interior quality. The astro-turf carpet and low grade leather do take away from the experience. At a little over 10,000 mile I have a ton of crease/ grain lines in the seat. Cleaning and conditioning has helped slightly. I don't think anything can be done about it.

At one of the s2k meets, i was a bit shocked to how the leather didnt hold up after such a short time -- especially for a 32k car. I think the entry angle (at least for me) probably doesnt help the problem. I have to somewhat slide over the drivers seat to get in the car. This kind of bends the leather each time. Over time it looks like the color fades away in the creases.

I have over 8K on mine and I've taken great care of it inside and out. I've used Zymol leather cleaner and conditioner on it every 2-3 weeks and it looks almost NEW!

Leather in ANY car requires care. You have to stay ahead of it with regular maintenance.

I've been spending a fair amount of time studying leather lately and our seats seem to be a really low grade. That said, mine got soaked the other day and were signifigantly improved afterwards. It made me wonder if steaming and treating might make a difference.

water's bad for leather but some humidity definitely helps keeping it "new."

also, pretty much a common sense but stay away from the sun- that means close the top whenever you leave the car and park it under shaded area.

if you see z3s' you'll find that bmw didn't do any better than honda.

if you park the car under the sun with the top opened,
even top graded leather such as "nappa" (or whatever it's called) will get killed soon.
