i have a MY07. i checked my oil this morning and noticed it was at or below the 'low' on the dipstick. isn't the car suppose to give you a light on the dash or something?

oil light is not for how much oil you have but for oil pressure.. if the sensor shows low oil pressure.. the oil light will come on.. on most 4 cylinder engines.. the oil light will come on when you have less than 2 quarts.. and they are called idiot lights for a reason
try to make it a weekly routine of checking your oil and having a little bit for reserve in these cases so that you can add some.
the factory oil capacity is 5.1 quarts, keep it around there.
edit:
oops, forgot you're the big block, nvm that oil capacity...

As everyone already explained, the light is not to show you your oil level but pressure. Now, due to our high-revving engines, our cars use up alot more oil than others. I feel you need to know this so your oil never goes down below "low" again. I recommend, you should check your level maybe everytime you fill up and just topping it off if needed. I would hate for any S to go bad because of negligence. They need our loving.
