Default Lugnuts...

This thread is in regards to Rays lugnuts..

I bought a new set 4 years ago and had them maybe 5 months before the sun started to fade them really bad. My darker blue lugnuts turned to civic SI blue in 6 months. So I thought maybe I had a defective set so I bought another set. Same thing happened after about 8 months. Keep in mind I had a garage in Hawaii. So I bought one more set and the same thing happened. They faded after 6 months as well. That was just half the problem. After taking on and off these lugnuts maybe 5-6 times in a 3 month period they started to lose grip. What I mean by that is that the tops would start to strip thus leaving me with nothing to torque them down with. So to me I gave Rays 3 strikes and they are out IMO. Plus they are way over priced.
At about the same time my friend called me up and was complaining that one of his Rays lugnuts came off while driving. So I was like you moron you didnt torque it down all the way. So I took a look at his car and to my amazement the stud was cut in half and no lugnut. It was odd. So that was strike 4. So then I tried out Spoon lugnuts. Low and behold 6 months went by and no fading. Thats odd, usually the Rays are baby blue by then. So I kept them. A year later they are still the same exact blue as when I purchased them. I sold them when I sold my wheels but I will buy another set because of the fading issue and they are pretty tough. Only downside is there is no locking nut. I took a look at the J's open ended lugnuts and they were built very similiar to the Spoon lugnuts. So with all of this said I would not recommend Rays lugnuts and would recommend Spoon until I notice they fade..
This is not a bash thread and dont want it to turn into one. I just want the buyers to beware of Rays lugnuts and the problems I had and the problems that other owners had.
I just dont like to see vendors sell items that I have owned and know have flaws. Thats all.
Any opinions? Also how many of you have had the same problems?

i don't race my car much so i never bought in to the idea that you need new lugnuts for volks. sounded WAY to expensive for some little pieces of metal. now i definetely will not buy them. i use my honda nuts and locks.

Your right. Its more of a bling item.. You save maybe a pound of weight but there are different colors. Thats all.

Yikes.......I got the Rays in Black for my Volks. Do you think that the fading issue will be that big a deal with Black? I mean do you think that they will turn grey?

I'm more concerned with the tightening and loosing issue than the color.

This has been a known problem for those forged aluminum lug nuts. IMO I don't see why you would want color lug nuts.. kind of hard to keep them in mint shape when your constantly subjecting them to abuse from rocks on the road and loosening and tightening them.

Some people prefer color vs the ugly stainless steel look.

are the Spoon/J's lugs made of aluminum like the Rays are?

my Mugen lugs (steel) are holding up very well. no discoloration, stripping etc..

just for reference, i used to run Rays lugs on my Desmond Regamasters on my Integra.

After putting the lugs on once, the paint (black) already started to chip off at the corner and after a couple times, the edges started getting rounder and rounder. Although, I never had the fading problem mentioned.
