I was making a left into a parking lot yesterday and had to cross traffic coming the opposite direction. So when I got my chance to go I had to start from a complete stop. Well when I did, the car didn't want to got anywhere once I let the clutch out and hit the gas in first. No punching it and no dropping the clutch, just a normal start. It was like I had traction control and the car just bogged down. I had cars coming at me so I just floored it and it still took a second to get the RPM's up, then it started hauling a$$. WTF was up with that. I've noticed it many other times but didn't think much of it.
Is it that my clutch is going out and it's slipping? God I hope not!

Sounds like heat soak to me...

 

I talked to my bro-in-law who is a master Honda mechanic. He said it's probably not the clutch and not to worry about it. He said it's probably just the warmer weather. The engine is sucking in 80 degree air it's just not responding as well as it did with 50 degree air. I and everyone else here knows cars respond better to cold air so that's a given. Said that it will just take a little more gas when you take off before you let the cluth out.

More than likely heat soak. During slow and stop-and-go traffic travel, your intake heats up and imparts that heat to the incoming air. If you're sitting there waiting to make a turn, your intake is heating up. When you give it gas, the air coming into the engine is much hotter than ambient, the engine retards timing, and your engine bogs for a second or two. If your clutch was slipping, your engine would rev high but you wouldn't be moving.

 

Aaaaa Haaaa! That must be it! That's exactly the symptoms I'm getting when sitting still at a light or waiting to cross traffic. Whewh! Thanks! I feel better now.

 

That's been happening to me since day 1. The Texas heat, combined w/ Houston traffic is the perfect combination for creating this annoying S2000 trait. I also noticed this problem after maintaining a constant high speed run and then hitting stop and go conditions.

I've currently installed the NZAIZAR Carbon Fiber Heat shield to see if it will prevent the air intake from being heated as much. Only time will tell if it was worth the cost, but it sure looks good sitting in the engine bay.

 

My IDI intake help with heatsoak. It improves throttle response. I am also installing a cf heat shield and mugen cooling mods.
