manual trans going extinct
edmunds writes an article about how DSG and F1 transmissions can be faster than true manuals, but that drivers suffer from being disconnected from the car. to me the s2000 is one of the kings of the driver involved manual transmissions. what do you guys think about the evolution of transmissions?
here's the edmunds article:

i think it just sucks to see good ol' manuals becoming less and less important
most younger guys here do not know how to drive a stick , and they kinda get a shock to discover my car is manual
IMO every car with a sporting flair should have a manual tranny option
but the sad thing is that they are kinda not selling well next to automatics

I have to agree that there's something pleasing about the mechanics of manual shifting -- getting the motions of hand, arm, foot (feet, actually) all smoothly synchronized.
But for efficiency and performance, don't knock those new DSG boxes until you've tried them. HPH

Nobody is saying that shifting a manual is faster compared to a DSG or a SMG. Every ham-fisted driver misses a shift every once in a while. It happens. All we're saying is that a 6-speed is simply a lot more fun to drive.
Yea the new Volkswagen DSG will be the benchmark, BMW's SMG is pretty poopy.
VW has the right idea though, in the new GTI it's a 6-speed manual standard, with teh DSG replacing the automatic.
So basically you either get a single clutch manual or a 2 clutch automatic with paddle shifting........If this is the future of performance cars me like.
