Default Mesh Windscreen

I saw a convertible Porsche 911 today and it had a mesh windscreen that was very large and thought to myself lets get Rick or somebody to make one for the S!!
Take Ricks 7/8 design and make it like 911 mesh instead of the clear plastic. Anybody think this would work better?

Can anyone explain to me why such cars have the mesh screen? Does it work as well as say... a plastic one? Or is it for looks alone?

Can you bundle a plastic screen up into your fist when not being used? You can do that with a mesh screen. If you don't want it on for the day, throw it in the trunk and don't worry about it getting scratched. No need to use screws to hold it on, either, usually slips over a hook or post.

Some pretty good reasons to use mesh...

the mesh screens, usually OE for german drop tops and available aftermarket for the miata, is made by oris. it has a lightweight metal frame and is not foldable or collapsable in any way. in certain applications, it can be folded down out of the way, but it is still vulnerable to damage.

they are quite fragile, but VERY effective.

the one for the miata runs about $250 and include mounting hardware.

my buddy has the mesh screen for his M roadster. Works very well. It goes over the roll hoops (I think) and it has a zipper portion for the middle, kinda like we push our plastic piece back for more air circulation, he just unzips the middle portion of his mesh and tucks it under.

Hey MacGuyver, sorry I couldn't get your light up kit. I ended up w/ a smoked/etched windscreen. Didn't know at the time that it had to be clear ONLY

I had a mesh screen on an SLK and my gf has the oris on a miata. Hard to explain why, but they work better than plastic (had one of those for the SLK too). I think they let some slow air through instead of forcing it all to rush over the top.

I would pay $$ for a good mesh screen that went over our roll hoops. They could also use the exisiting snaps for the useless top cover.

I had a mesh screen on my Mercedes SL. The screen is a foldable two part. Basically a "L" shape. One horizontal, one verticle. Very effective at stopping wind. You can actually heat up the interior on a cold day as it creates a "bubble" inside the interior area. One thing going for it is the sheer size. It is huge compared to our factory clear screen.

I drove a Z with one of those mesh screens. It blocked the wind well, but my perception on it is, if you want so little wind, buy a Targa car, not a convertable. Because that's all it feels like.
