I have over revved my car about 6 months ago, but my car runs like champ so far.
Should i be worried and get it checked out?

I had the same exactly same experience! My car just a month old, miss shift from 3rd to 2nd by "death grip" on the shifter and let clutch totally off. I saw my rev all the way pass the red line, and lower gear force to slow down my car speed. After another month practice, I'll beware during shifting, and find the way to shift smooth and slick. Now, I don't feel anything wrong to my engine yet!? *Thanks (Wisconsin S2k) for the term:"death grip"

I mean no disrespect. I think we all feel for you. You claim the engine went to 12000 rpms. The tachometer doesn't go anywhere near that number so I don't know how you come up with it.
If he was going about 120 mph in 4th gear, if you shift it to third accidentally, you know you'll be turning over 12,000 rpms because 3rd gear is 10 mph/1000 rpms, so at 120 mph in third you'd be turning over 12,000 rpms. You can use the gear calculator to find it for the other gears as well, but with the S2000's gearing it's right around 12,000 rpms for all the gears.

I'd say listen to your engine when it's idle. If it idles rough then you might have problem. But if the engine runs smooth all the time then I woudn't worry abou tit.

Then I'd get it checked out. You may have cracked a couple of retainers, which would eventually drop the valves on your piston, and then you're looking at a valvetrain rebuild. Just spend a few hundred dollars now and get the retainers checked out, and then you won't have that problem in the future.

If you have high mileage anyway this is a pretty good idea for preventative maintence.

Listen to Wisconsin, and get your retainers checked.

By the time your car shows any symptoms of an over rev, it will be too late.

I, too, toasted my retainers during an over rev. The car ran perfectly with no apparent damage to the valvetrain but, upon inspection I had several cracked retainers. It was only a matter of time before I dropped a valve.

Good luck.

I did a big fat 3rd-2nd mechanical overrev on my s when it had all of 700-800 miles on it... gawd that sucked. I did not get it checked out, but I didn't even know what to check...

I'm now at 4600 miles and haven't had any problems, but after reading this thread I might pop the valve cover off and have a looky... dropped valves are teh devil

All right, i took it in today and they said that the sound i was hearing was from carbon build up on the valves and the oil from my K&N filter got into the throttle body. They are quoting me 150 to clean the throttle body and the carbon on the valves. Does this sound reasonable? I am considering poping the valve cover off, and checking it myself when i get it back. I know how to do this. I just dont know what to look for after that. Does anyone mind giving me a description or picture of what a cracked retainer looks like?
