hey guys i was just wondering, i just started putting in mobile one on my S. and im planning on doing that everytime from now on. how often do i have to do the oil change wen using mobile one? the mechanic told me every 5000 miles with the mobile one.

 

5000 miles should be fine. Read the oil-journals stickied on the site, it has just about everything you possibly need to know.

 

The past couple yrs. I've changed mine 1st thing in the spring...but i've only been driving 3k miles / yr.

 

where cna i get some of thsi 'mobile one' stuff???? is it hottt??

 

I've been using Mobil One Synthetic Motor Oil here in Mobile, Alabama since 10,000 miles

....sorry, everyone hates a smart a$$.......I haven't tracked my car, it's my daily driver and I feel like I'm probably not defined as the "severe use" in the owners manual but I do push my car so I change it every 5k (in the middle of the 7,500k or 3000k) as I have done in the last few cars I've owned. Using synthetic may let you stretch it more but why chance it.

The old 3k oil change is basically bunk as far as I'm concerned unless you race your car. It's only still pushed by Jiffy Lube and Dealership service depts to make more $$ off of you

 

u know what's funny, before BMW and MB implemented "free maintenance" program, they swore by oil changes every 3k miles.. but after it started, the interval magically changed to 15k..

BMW and MB have oil quality monitor since 1997 and the oil change interval is 10k miles to 15k miles, depend number of engine starting and average speed. MB starts with convention oil and NO free schedule maintenances. Starting model year 2000, all MB vehicles' schedule maintenances, oil and filter, brake flush, coolant flush, cabin dust filter, windshield wiper insert ..., are free, but all of them are recommended to use Mobil 1 0W40. I know this, because I bought my wife E430 new in 04/2000.
A couple years ago MB extended engine warranty for 1997-1999 cars, because of oil sludge from their recommendation of using conventional oil and extended oil change interval up to 15k miles using their FSS (Flexible Schedule Services)

 

um, no, bmw service indicator lights are strictly by gas usage, there are no 'oil quality monitors'

 

With respects, I think if you'll recheck the "severe usage" parameters again, I'd bet you'll find that you fall within them on temperatures along, at least in the summer time. This would probably be true for just about anyone in the southern states.
