theres no way you are getting 28 mpg straight city. even my 98 corolla doesnt get that good around town. and 31 hwy? if you really get 28 city then you should get like 38 on hwy right? where did u pull these numbers out of? the only explanation is that your "city" is actually all highway with maybe a traffic light once in a blue moon.

IMO, it is really all about driver technique. as someone stated earlier, some people don't understand that if they mash WOT and shift all the gears at 3 o4 4k, it'll kill your mpg even if it's a low shift point. why? because you're opening the TB, it takes a lot of air in, and the computer tells it to mix more fuel to try and achieve the optimum a/f ratio. btw, does the car run rich or lean when you just mash on the throttle?

as for my own experiences, worst i got was aroun 19mpg. this was just mashing on the throttle at wot (i took off the stock airbox cover, so i wanted the noise) and lots of 1, 2, 3 vtec shifts.

now, I average around 25-26mpg with 80% city, 20% highway, and usually can get +260mi per tank. I drive like a granny tho and piss everyone off. I barely tap the gas and shift at around 2-3k rpms in all the gears. it takes me about 10-15 seconds to reach 45mph. i also don't speed and I usually cruise at speed limit (65 or 70mph).

best I got was 31mpg from stockton to san jose round trip, doing about 65 mph on cruise.

im seeing around 25 mpg 50/50 mix highway/city. and thats with some VTEC. If you imagine when driving your S that you were driving a bicycle, you will save lots of gas. (not braking, proactive cruise control, etc)

Lets see ur corolla sucks than, i got 40mpg in my old fit. Where did i get this i take how many gallons at the pump i put in and divide that by how many miles i went on that tank and that gives u MPG. Now i would say that pensacola is very flat and is not a big city more of a suburb so not alot of traffic lights but i do hit them. And when i got 31.1 i was doing 80mph so my revs were alot higher than my normal drivng. I shift at 2500 to about 3500rpms i try to keep it below 3500rpms when driveing in town.

i'm surprised no one has mentioned getting a valve adjustment. i had crappy idle and poor mpg (~18-19 mpg); after getting my valves adjusted by its2krazy, the mpg came back to ~25-26mpg.

the idle's also better; it doesn't stall out by itself anymore.

Go on a really long drive at least 1-2 days per week and you will notice your mpg go up. My Subaru was getting around 21-22 when I was living in Philadelphia; now that I'm home in Jersey and have been driving to LBI several times, I'm getting 30.
