Ok so first of all...it doesn't say anywhere that this guy is only 16 OR that this is his first car.
it says hes getting his FULL license and wants an ap1.
where i live you get your PROVISIONAL license at 16 and 6 months and FULL license at 18 so...
anyway i got my provisional at 16 and a half and drove a base model automatic rsx for over a year. I saved up from when i got it and eventually sold it for my 01 ap1 right before i turned 18. it is obviously my first rwd car and manual. i only drove stick 2 times ever before this car. i was able to learn on it fine and be mature about it and have been driving the car since may with no problems.
Driving a nice sports car has to do more with self control and maturity. young age alone does not mean this is not a good car for anyone that's stereotyping to me.
i say get it and you wont regret it i love mine

Another thing, driving the car since May without any issue is excellent, although it isn't nearly enough time to say that nothings coming up (God forbid, not trying to wish anything on you personally).
When someone comes on a forum and talks about driving experience with many cars and JUST getting a full license, it sounds strange to everyone. Even though he's been driving since he was 13 or whatever, it's different than driving everyday, taking cars to the track, doing driving schools, rainy track days, car control clinic, autocross, you get the picture. This happens to be an unforgiving car and that's why people who've experienced that don't recommend it as a first car.
The s2000, especially an ap1, is too much car for someone that age without the proper skills to control it. You need to know what you're getting into, because if he does buy the car, and he's put into a situation where the tail comes out or he goes into a turn too fast, he's going to panic and make a mess of things. I highly recommend a miata, it's like an s2000 with less power and they're a lot of fun (AND less likely to get him into trouble). I can guarantee that he'll learn more from the Miata as a first car than the s2000. It's like crawling before you walk.
Read this thread https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/894017-another-end/
also idk why but i bet it was handed to her and i feel like an 18 year old that saved up and payed for his s2000 is going to treat it nicely and respect it more than a teenager that got the whole car just handed to him/her for graduating high school or something along those lines.

You have no idea....there are some chicks who can draw circles around more than average biker guys on twisties
c'mon man the thread you show has an s2000 an 18 year old female flipped. we all know how female drivers can be...

the OP is going to do what he wants anyway, just putting the knowledge out there.
It's possible that your brother doesn't like the s2000 because he knows that's exactly what you want to buy for your first car. He may secretly know its a great car, but if he shows affection for it in front of you it may encourage you to get it.
This is what I would do- Don't buy an s2000 for your first car.
Instead, grab something cheap and front wheel drive for your first year or 2 of driving. Read this forum in the meantime. I would then trade the fwd car in for something cheap and rwd, preferably something like a v6 mustang. Miata would be a good option too but those are even harder to dd than an s2000. Also, I personally am terrified of Miata rollovers and would only drive one with a street-friendly roll bar if that exists.
Get used to rwd, continue reading s2ki, and then step into your dream s2000. Pick your exact year that you want. Be ready to invest in the perfect tires and maintenance items. Make your s2000 experience perfect by having the driving experience and car knowledge necessary to get the most out of it.
The best mod for an s2000 beyond the driver mod is a second car. Maybe start on something very cheap like the new Nissan Versa. Then save for a bit and grab an s2000 as your fun car.

I got my s2k when I graduated HS and that was 6 years ago. I still have the car and I plan to keep it forever. If you drive responsibly and not like a jackass then you'll be fine.
<I'm 19, and I've had my S for only about 7 months. Without exagerating, I'm probably one of the most responsible drivers I know. I think all of this talk about "take time to learn the car" and "slowly push your limits" are ridiculous, unless they are in the context of a controlled setting, like an autocross course or a track. You should never "push" your limits on the street, especially with this car. This might get me some flack, but I find it incredibly irresponsible that people try to develop their driving skills on public roads.
With regards to power, the S2000 isn't any more likely to get you into trouble than any other car so, in many ways it's a much better car for a new driver who wants a sports car. However, the handling characteristics can make it a handful at times. Driven well within the limits of its driver and tires, the S2000 can be a relatively safe car, especially compared with other two-seater convertibles. That said, right after I got my license, there's NO WAY I was responsible enough for a car like this.
If you want an S2000 and have the means, get one! Just be responsible - know where it is and isn't appropriate to push the car to and beyond your limits.
Another note on costs - everyone is dead on. Be sure you're ready for all the maintenance and unexpected costs. I just had to replace my transmission with ~47k miles due to the previous owner's negligence.
Have fun and good luck!

Most stereotypes are valid. There are exceptions in any stereotype.
If you see a Chrysler 300 with limo tint and 24" chrome rims roll up...would it shock you if a 90 year old couple got out of it?
What about a Jacked up Ford F250 Diesel on 35" tires? Would you expect Tiger Woods to be driving it? Stereotypes exist because they are valid.
Tell your brother he can like it because it's your dream car or he can f off - don't buy some pansy 250 ninja with 25 hp errr sorry miata buy the car you want the first time just respect it. dont lower it and put ridiculous wheels with 85 degrees of negative camber and go ricing around you will die. Just chill out put the top down and enjoy.
When I bought mine I had just finished up my daily driver a 140hp 9 second 600rr streetbike - it was my 21st car and I've done more track days and actual road races than I care to remember but for the first whole month I didnt even try to test it. My friend on the other hand spun his on the fwy merging withint the first month, spun it again following me up grr and then finally spun it again just passing and it going to cost him 4K+ to fix this time.
There is nothing dangerous about the car that doesnt mean you can drive like a jack ass and not pay for it.

In all reality you are going to try and get the s2000 regardless of what anyone says. So why did you start a thread? Hopefully you parents are not stupid enough to let you get the car. I'll be on the look out for a "I just totaled my s2000 thread".
