Default My first VTEC - and nothing major happened? What's wrong?

I read all about how exciting it is to 'VTEC' for the first time. I patiently waiting until my odometer hit 700 miles and then took the car to 7200 rpms in 3rd gear. While it seems fast, I did not notice any real change in the sound of the engine and the acceleration remained pretty constant throughout. No massive power surge at 6000 rpm, like I had expected after reading previous posts. Do you have to drop the top to hear the engine sound of the VTEC kicking in? And will more mileage make the VTEC shift more pronounced?

Angrybee - if you don't have 3 bars on the temp gauge - no VTEC! You will really notice it if you run it up in second. Let us know how it goes.

jojog - So the engine has to be running warm to get the kick? I was wondering if the VTEC reaction was surpressed because of the gear I was in.

Woodson - It is brand new so my oil should be fine .... shouldn't it? What should I be looking for? Too high or too low oil level?

Did you take it to 9000 RPM in FIRST gear? you should definatly notice it from 6000 - 9000 RPM in first and second.

If you try to vtec before you have 3 bars on the temp. gauge, you will hit the rev limiter. Prevents you from damaging the engine. If your oil level is low, you will not vtec. This car goes through oil (some more than others). Check your oil AT LEAST once a week.

One more thing: you'll KNOW when you hit vtec (especially in the lower gears). Have a blast!

Excellent input guys. I'll check the oil, the temp gauge and try it in lower gears and see what I get. I did not redline it yet: I'm too afraid. The thing sounds ferocious at 7200. I'm afraid of wait awaits me....
