Default My very first new owner question

No not the seat belts....those drive me NUTS by the way....I know the fix already...

The question is about the clutch. I've had 3 manual cars before and none of them were as jerky as S2k. Like for example....when I put my cars in reverse and start backing out slowly, before I was able to let the clutch go....not on S2k, at such a slow speed I have to hold the clutch half way in or the car almost stalls. Whats up with this ? Is that clutch delay valve screwing with me ? because 1st to 2nd are not exactly smooth either.... been driving the car for about 500-600 miles now

A '69 Datsun Pick-up, a '79 Skoda and a Metropolitan doesn't count. Just learn how to really drive stick.

lol, the clutch *issue* is the utter lack of torque at low rpm and the low rotational mass of the engine. Basically, if you drop the clutch in this car at low rpm, you'll stall the car out easily. You have to let it out slower then with most cars that have power.

What rpm are you engaging the clutch at?

actually don't know, never paid attention. when should I engage it ? and what are the best shifting points on this car ?

I'm assuming you have an ap2, since I don't think the ap1 has the delay valve.

I engage mine at 2k in first and don't let it dip below that. Shifting at 3k is about the minimum for me, otherwise usually around 4-5kish.

Oh, and as far as the jerky shifts, you have to shift pretty fast in these cars. Since there is such a low rotational mass, it gains and loses rev's VERY fast. So if you take too long to shift, it will lose too many rpms and it will jerk more.

hmmm...I thought my s2k was much smoother than my Civic. But yeah, it will be jerky if you're slow with shifting or not winding it out long enough. I have an ap1...

If your 1st to 2nd shift is not smooth then it may be time to change your transmission fluid!
I also noticed the same "Weirdness" about the clutch in reverse. Does not seem to want to go at the slow pace I need to back up into the garage .I have too stop at least 3 times because of making sure I am aligned with driveway on one side then I have to make sure I dont hit the other two vehicles in the driveway so I found the best way is to push in clutch and leave in neutral until I find my correct alignment path . All my other vehicles I can back up with no problems and they will back up at nice slow pace without having to push clutch in. I dont consider this a big deal . I have gotten used to it now!

well service records show that tranny fluid has been changed only like 3k miles ago. I wonder if dealer done a good job on this....because they also put GL4 in rear diff.
