Why does everyone focus on peak numbers and think they mean something?

From 6,500 on up the car picks up a ton of power ... and a boat load after 8,300. I'll take a car with a nice fat mid-range over a peak number dyno queen any day of the week.

^ Let me guess.....You own the Ap2 right?

And if you liked the scream of the Vtec engine all the way to 9k you would pick it.

Or if you had purchased before the year 2004 you would rather the higher revving, rawer appeal of the earlier model?

How come every time I am approached by someone who has some knowledge of the Honda, the first question they ask "is this one of the ones that can rev to 9k?"

I think that with both cars running the quarter in egual times and the ap2 having no real advantage over the ap1 (other than 8 great big lbs of torque) that a simple gear set change couldn't mend, there has to be something said for keeping it in the red for another 1,000 rpms.
After all.....Isn't that the spot on the tach that really widens the grin on all of our faces?

^^

Whoah benny calm down! where you going?!

all he said was not to focus on just a simple number at a single RPM point!

Those numbers don't sound too bad since my recollection of 2000 and 2001's base anywhere from 175-190 WHP. Perhaps he was using a mustang type dyno instead of your preferred inflated numbers dyno.

Hey shivers do you go to P1 alot? I live right down the street and I'm gonna check them out soon.

does seem a little low if the first graph is stock and the second is after all the mods. Although, I don't think the Apexi N1 and PRM are the biggest power adders. I would think you should be reaching closer to 210.

its funny though cause I could probably make that graph in MSPaint

the numbers are before and after the vafc2. the first number was with the intake/exhaust.

i didnt post to try and show off it, was because people like looking at these things. i dont care if i have the highest peak or most torque. i never will because im not willing to throw that much money at it. i just do what i like and be glad that i can even own a car like this.

as for the intake/exhaust combo, they are probably just fine power-price wise. what would i get for the extra $1k of a j's or t1r? about 2 horsepower and bragging rights. now dont get me wrong i intend to change it eventually but for what i paid for the apex it'll do for now. plus its made well. the comptech i paid twice as much for on my last car started falling apart after 30k.

im sure there could have been a alot of factors contributing to numbers. maybe my plugs were messed up, maybe i need a valve adjustment, maybe the car wasnt happy after the twelfth pull ... who knows

thnaks for looking and posting!

I don't go to P1 a lot because I live in Nashville.

But I have known Jack for a while. I got parts from him back in the day when I had my Civic. I took my car to him for tuning after I built the engine. He's one of the few people I would completely trust working on my car. He's very knowledgeable when it comes to anything Honda/Acura related.
