Default Mysterious scary noise and shudder

Yesterday, I was driving over to my GF's after taking the car out for a spirited hour long drive. I was going straight on a smooth two lane street at about 25 mph. I was driving like a grandfather (I can say that because I will be a grandfather any day ) I heard a loud bam/clunk that seemed to come from behind me on the left side of the car. I actually felt the vibrations through the steering wheel. I saw nothing in the road prior to this happening. I couldn't stop right away so I continued a bit, then when traffic cleared, I went back to look for something -- anything -- in the road. Nothing! Then I pulled over and looked underneath the car. I didn't see anything. I paid particular attention how the car felt after this happened and it seems fine. Has anyone had this sort of thing happen to them? What do YOU think happened? It sure as hell scared the hell out of me. The car's an '02 -- bought in the first week of July -- with 4800 miles. Thanks in advance.

Marc

You bet! I stopped, got out, and checked them thoroughly. No problem. Then I drove off slowly, listening very carefully for any anomolies --- nothing.
