The proper effect is that you will have a clean transition of the vehicle in the rear-view mirror to the left or right side mirror, which eliminates the blind spots. I still have a habit of turning my head to the left when the top is up though.

the passengers mirror can adjust out far enough, but the drivers definitely won't(atleast on mine and one I test drove)

The driver's mirror on the '02 adjusts fine.
