Opps, okay I think this is correct

Here is what we have so far. Showing a lot of interest. Hopefully we can get enough to get Ricks attention.
I dropped him a mail this morning, with a link to this thread.

I'll jump in on this group buy. Will this include the OEM install parts and yellow box? what about the reinforced diff?

Also can somebody describe the sound of the 4.57's whine? Is it high pitched like nails on a chalk board?
you know when you shift into 1st gear as you're slowing down but haven't stopped and you hear the whine of your gears/synchros? it's like that but can be louder. the gear whine completely depends on the install. the whine is perfectly tolerable for me, as it is very quiet at some speeds, and my girlfriend never complains.

It'll probably be just for the gears, the oem parts and box are like a bill each. and the reinforced diff is up to you.......Im not planning on getting one, I don't clutch drop or auto x.

and the diff is like 760 then when you send them your core its around 350

and if you read a few posts above I think its mentioned about the whine, if not then look under the FAQ.
You WILL need the OEM parts, so you might as well try to get that on the group buy too.

Also, rick's includes a shim kit, but you may have to get shims fabricated. There is an s2ki owner in illinois who may be willing to help people out with that. I was able to get a shim from work that was the correct size, and we just had to dremel out the inside of the shim ring a bit.

Also, I can try to post some video of what the gear whine sounds like with my camcorder.

Lastly.

Obviously you aren't going for a group buy on the diff, but let me throw this out there.

#1 If you ever get the diff, you will have to completely re-install the gear set, as the diff requires pulling out the pinion and gear and putting them into the new diff. Since it's a different diff, the measurements may not be the same, so it's going to cost you at least the gear install cost since you have to get the gears installed again, and once again you'll probably need the $100 in OEM parts as well. If you're even considering the diff, just get it the same time as the gears and be done with it, otherwise you'll pay twice as much down the road.

#2 The comptech diff reinforced the bearing caps that go over the bearings for the axle/half shafts. Basically this is the part that is spun by the gear/torsen LSD box. The aftermarket comptech billet caps are much stronger, as they add double the material and reinforce the stock caps, IN ADDITION to using STUDS instead of bolts. The studs are much stronger.

Obviously for clutch dumps, racing, or aggressive driving this is an item you should consider. Even in stock form, the caps can have a slight flex to them when accelerating or under heavy load, which can cause premature or uneven gear/pinion wear. In other words, this is a somewhat known weak point. So yes, even a stock S2000 has enough power to cause a slight flex in these diff caps. This also prevents the pinion gear from being thrown out the back of the diff, which is another possible part of this failure.

If you baby the car, then fine. But if you drive spiritedly, you can be at risk. Not saying the diff will blow up cuz you vtec the car, but it can happen. It's RARE, but it does happen. And sometimes this is also from abuse to the diff. (clutch dumps are hardly the only form of punishment for this diff..... improperly driving the car, hard acceleration, hard cornering, etc) But when you corner hard and accelerate, this is causing that stress on the caps too.

This is what I've seen from research done on s2ki.com. I'm certainly not the end all, be all, but that's my advice and my opinion.

So, does anyone have both the lighter flywheel and the gear mods? Id like to hear if there are recommended together.

thanks,
Aaron

I'm probably in too. Can someone get a clip of the sound? I'm still confused as to how loud and what it sounds like exactly.

it would probably take 4-6 hours depending on whether or not they have ever done an S2k gear install. this of course, assuming you dont need to fabricate a shim.

wouldn't everyone have to fabricate a shim? why would you have to get one made and me be able to use the one in the package? (hypothetically)
And who was it that you knew of that might be able to get one made?
