wouldn't everyone have to fabricate a shim? why would you have to get one made and me be able to use the one in the package? (hypothetically)
And who was it that you knew of that might be able to get one made?
What determines the thickness of shims needed is the checking distance and then contact patch.

Each gearset comes etched with the appropriate checking distance assumed to be optimal for that set. Since each set is different, that's why you may or may not need to get a shim made. The checking distance is the distance from the top of the pinion perpendicular to the imaginary line going through the center of the ring gear.

Anyways, a good spot to start will likely be around .104 inches for shim depth. My shim depth ended up at .103 inches. But again each gear is different so it will vary. The checking distance is where to start. Then you check the contact patch once backlash is set and determine if more or less shims are needed.

I'll get the name of the guy who offered to help get shims.

where is the 4.57 whine video?

are you saying the 'whine' is negligible?

So, does anyone have both the lighter flywheel and the gear mods? Id like to hear if there are recommended together.

thanks,
Aaron
I have an 8lb clutchmaster FW, and will be upping the gears soon. I'll post a write up when it's all said and done.

I posted a thread in this forum called "what does 4.57 gear whine sound like". should be on the 1st page still.

At this point a GB is not going to work for us. We (Rick's) offered one back when the gears first released. I think that if we are to offer a GB on gears again, it would be at the end of the season (Oct, Nov) time frame. There are reasons for this timing that I just can't post openly at this point.

Thanks for your interest

well for those interested and who don't immediately have the cash, obviously you might want to book mark this thread and come back to it in the fall.

hopefully stratocoaster and ricks2k can come up with something for you then.

even if not, I paid the full price $590 for these gears and wouldn't think twice about doing it again. this is the best mod I've ever done to my car.
