You're only young once, I say go for it. I got my S at the beginning of my last year of university and don't regret it at all......much more reliable than my slow '94 GTI and insurance is the exact same cost. Not sure what year you were thinking but AP1's arent exactly hugely expensive these days, its not like you're digging yourself a huge hole, especially living at home and (assuming) not throwing away money on rent. If you can pay for it straight up, (I had a bunch of money saved up from summer co-op jobs to pay for mine) even better.
