Default Need some input

Looking at purchasing an AP1, just wondering what a good/great deal would be.

2001 NFR
All stock, 27,xxx miles, carfax says clean title, 3 owners
ordered PPI, mechanic said no concerns, will need a new roof as the rear plastic window is cracked
location PNW

Seller asking $30k, wondering if this is fair for the current market, and what would be a great deal for this vehicle

"Good deal" largely depends on your intended use of the car and where you want to keep it. I can't recommend daily driving a nearly 25 year old car parked in a driveway or apartment parking lot. These cars never had the performance suggested in the F&F movies and trying to drive them like that frequently involves wrecks especially the very early cars which have very quick handling that will catch the typical Civic driver unawares.

Budget $2,000 for a new, professionally installed roof. Bungled or even less attention to detail will result in water leaking into the trunk. Assuming "PNW" means the rain forests of Oregon or Washington you have to be very careful. These are available with the plastic or glass rear window. Keeping the car in "collector" condition means the plastic rear window otherwise the glass is a better choice. Car will probably need fresh tires for another $1,000 for performance tires. There are limited choices due to the small 16" wheels on the early cars.

Are you specifically looking for an AP1 or just ran across this one? Hopefully you're not looking for just any S2000. These cars are NOT all alike with biennial improvements or changes.

If no crashes/rust and otherwise solid mechanically, it seems in the ballpark pricewise.

Will be my weekend/sunny day car. Plan to leave it unmodified and no intention to drive it crazy. Will be stored in garage when not driven.

im not looking specifically at ap1, but came across this low milage one and it peaked my interest.

thanks for the info Chuck

Thanks for the additional information. You should be able to find a very late car with only a few more miles for that same price.

Use the link I sent earlier and familiarize yourself with the differences. Then sit down and create a priority list. Stuff at the top, especially #1, are what you consider mandatory. Those toward the bottom less so. This will create a short list, perhaps a very short list. My priority list had "pure stock" and under 40,000 miles on it and was headed by 2006 or later for all the AP2V2 improvements (including the larger wheels) and the ability to easily tune the car for increased mid-rpm power and performance. Color was not on the list other than maybe "not yellow or black." The chart below shows the USA color availability -- some colors are quite rare and only available in specific model years. Since color was waaaaaaaaaay down my priority list my car is, of course, Silverstone Metalic.

I was able to hit all my requirements other than "pure stock" as the car had horrible black aftermarket wheels. But this was 10 years ago and I knew OEM wheels were available so that requirement was easily handled in a few weeks after purchase.

(I shamelessly plagiarized this chart from notes here and have no idea why some numbers are highlighted in different colors. There are other less busy editions of the chart on the forum as well.)

This seems a little pricey. How does it compare to other ones you've seen?

For clean titles I don’t think I’ve seen below 20k, unless they are pushing close to 200k miles.

there’s a 2007 with 100k miles for 25k (3 accidents on carfax), red

there’s a 2002 with 75k miles for $29,500, red

there’s a 2000 with 90k miles for $29,500, silver

a 2005 with 40k miles for $40k, black

so maybe the market runs high in the Portland / seattle area

I just took a look at S2000s posted on Craigslist in the Portland and Seattle areas. Based on your description, the car you are considering does not appear to be overpriced for this market. In my experience the mild climate of Pacific Northwest makes it a safe haven for automobiles. Here in the Portland area they never salted the roads until finally okaying its use just a few years ago. Most years we see such small amounts of snow that it is a moot point. In addition, the large amount of cool overcast days we experience each year does a good job of preventing paint and interiors from fading and doesn’t tend to dry out interiors like the blazing sun in the Southwest does. Best of luck to you with your search.

FYI: There is a good group of fellow S2K owners here in the NW Oregon / SW Washington area that put together a number of great drives every year.

thanks for the link to the group. I’m just outside the Portland metro area and joining a drive some time sounds great.

seller came down a bit on the price so I picked it up today. Happy to be apart of the s2000 family!
