I'm struggling with this whole winter thing. I want to be able to take the S2K out on days when the roads are clear, not in the middle of a snow fall though.

Sooo, I called Tire Rack and talked to them about winter tires. It's kinda late in the season to get really expensive winter tires ($552.80 for a set of the Blizzak LM-22), so I'm thinking about getting a set of high performance all-season tires.

The best tires I've seen so far are the Dunlop SP 5000. A set of four that match the original size (205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 rear) are $430.28. Any thoughts about these tires or another brand?

Thanks,
Andrew

I think you then get a halfassed performance under all conditions. Consider the compromise carefully.

Well, this isn't a permanent replacement. During the summer I want to switch back to the S-02's.

IMO, you should go for the Blizzaks or something similar. If you don't use them up this winter, then you will next year (assuming you're going to keep the car that long, of course). While I've never used Blizzaks (not enough snow here), everyone I know who does just raves about them. And don't forget the money you'll save by not using up those pricey S-02s in the meantime.

PsychoBen just installed a set of SP 5000's....maybe he will be able to test them out and let us know how they performed under different road conditions.

First off, based on the pictures posted here as well as my own measurements of the actual tread contact patch, I'd SERIOUSLY be looking at 245s on the back to match the relative performance of the original S02s.

Secondly, I've used various performance-oriented all-seasons on my Preludes and Integra for the past decade. I've had some relative winners and one really poor tire (Yokohama V-rated all-season, one of the first of the breed, back in '92 or '93). They will NOT match the original handling characteristics of the S02s and will not handle lots of snow all that well. It's worked well enough on my Preludes, what with FWD and different vehicle dynamics. I am not gonna put these on the S2K since it would be a poor compromise, IMHO.

I never intended the S2K to be the winter beater. I'd rather drive my wife's Civic...

Andrew,
I got a set of Blizzaks from Tire Rack last month and can't say enough good about them. I've had my S-2000 out every day so far this winter (I live just outside of Chicago) and have yet to be stopped by snow! Just remember that driving in snow is just like beer, SMOOOOOTH over everything.
