I'm new to the forum and in the process of shopping for a used S2000. I looked at a 2000 that is Honda certified and has 21K miles on it. 1 thing I encountered, off throttle, there is a rattle coming from the exhaust (stock) like it's banging against a heat shield. We checked the car fax report and measured the thinkness of the paint and it fairly consistent so I'm pretty sure it has never been in an accident. Is that a common problem? Otherwise, the car seems absolutely flawless.

Also, in your opinion, how is the S2K as a commuter? This is going to be my commuter car (110 miles round trip everyday...) TIA.

should not have that rattle...

mine is a commuter too, but not for 110 miles- depends on what kind of road you are on.
if twisties- go for it!
if long boring stretches, or stop and go traffic, prob not the best car (unless you can open it up). its not a comfort car, its a machine that wants to play!

 

The noise isn't normal..
On the weekends I usually put 150+ miles on her.. It not SUV comfy, but it's good.

 

It might be the clutch buzzing; that's a known issue on certain years and it can sound like a heat shield rattle at times. There is a service bulletin about this and the Honda dealer should be able to check if it has been done on that particular car or not.
