Is the difference in the transmition highly noticeable, or only slightly?

Only slightly.
My '01 transmission is perfection itself. Anything "differnt" is less.

Saint, I think the trick is to drive the car and make sure it's smooth. For some reason, there is variance among the cars (of all years). My tranny is like butter too (like Barry's). Other folks have grinds.

The grinds apparently can develop over time.

I'm planning on buying a '01 with 7K on it....will it still have warranty? If not, is it possible to get a good one? I'm in CA and for some reason, aftermarket warranties are not available here right now...some new law or something...sorry for all the questions (a little paranoid after owning an Rx-7) I know Honda doesn't cover all the TSBs, but will they cover most of them? Gear grinding, spark plugs, updated strikers/latches, buzzing clutch on deceleration etc....? Thanks!

Saint, the factory new-car warrantee is basically 3 years. You'd be at the end of the term. I'm not sure the warrantee is transferable, actually (I'll check it when I get home later).

The TSB work seems to depend on the dealer (or more specifically the regional service manager). You might do well to just have a chat with the service manager of your local dealer and flat out ask him what they'll do for you. Maybe engaging them before a purchase would be a positive step.

maybe it has to do with your driving technique.

Razor, pdx... I'm not sure technique is the root cause of the gear grind. It's a fairly common problem around the board, from what I've read.

No question.

Just to speak to Saint's concerns though... In good examples of the S2000 shifter (like Barry's and mine -- for whatever reason), it is the slickest, cleanest shifter I've ever owned.

Drive the '01, Saint, and if it doesn't feel right, it isn't!
