Default new member with a few questions

Hi all, just got an 2003 but didnt realize that it does not come with factory alarm. One question I have is the effectiveness of the immobilizer. Is it possible to steal the car by hot-wiring it or does it have to be towed alway for someone to steal it. Secondly, are people still having their seats stolen and how effective is the seat lock in preventing vandalism. Also, coming from a turbo-charged car, does the s2000 have to cool down before shutting off during normal driving or is this not really an issue unless driven hard and on really hot days. tia john

i think tow away is the most common way of stealing the S.
Seats can be stolen regardless of whether it has seat locks or not...
i don't think you need to cool down an S but I guess it couldn't hurt?

In N/A cars, cooling before shutting off is not necessary.

The car does come with a factory alarm. Roll down your windows, lock the car with the remote, give a few seconds to arm, reach in and unlock the door by hand and then open the door.... sounds like and alarm to me

Just hit the unlock button to shut it off.

My car definitely doesn't do that... I was pretty surprised.

Seat locks are a good idea, especially for people in CA.

Will they prevent vandalizam? Doubtful but if someone breaks into your car, at least the likelyhood of them getting away with your seats is LOW. It can take a dealership MONTHS to get all the parts needed to replace stolen seats. Even if they slash your seats, at least you will be able to drive the car while you wait for new covers.

As for alarms, the immobilizer should prevent all but the most sophisticated theives from hotwiring the car, however towing is a very common tactic.

Even the optional factory alarm is pretty weak. I have a pager based system that, when triggered, will page me within certain range of the car. Coupled with a proximity sensor it offers the best possible protection against vandalizem or theft. (Especially if you have a garage at home to park in too.) If you must park outside then use a cover.
