Default New owner shifting question

Hello I recently purchased a 2007 S2000 with 11 miles on it, straight from the showroom floor. I traded in my junky mustang because is shifted so horrible and was real knotchy from 2nd to 3rd.

I thought I would be in shifting heaven, however the car has about 450 miles on it and I feel the too familar mustang knotch when shifting into 3rd. I thought maybe it just me and the way I shift so I let a coworker take it out and he felt the knotch too. He said that he didnt really feel it when he didnt press the clutch all the way in though. I always full depress the clutch though.

We then took his 350z out and I shifted the way I always do and felt no knotch at all when shifting into 3rd. It was perfect.

So the question is I guess, is this normal for the S2000? Do I really have to granny it into 3rd to not feel a knotch? Does it take it a little while to break in maybe? Do I need to really get into the rpm range before upshit to 3rd?Or worse could the trans be screwed already with only 450 miles on it?

Please help!

Also sry for post in wrong part of forum.
Thanks.

Nope.. you posted in the right forum...

Not sure I quite understand btw... you traded in a Mustang for an S2000 because of the way it shifted?

Anyway, notchy..hmm.. with just 450 miles..I don't think anything is wrong, but you can ask the dealership to check it out... Might be just the tranny fluid...

First thing in the morning? Cold weather?

Things could get weird with cold starts. Consider getting the countersunk shift knob from Rick's. At $40, that is th ebest perfomance acessory you can buy for the S. It greatly improves shifting and shift feel on an already great tranny. I have notchiness issues with my car to date and it improved things marginally after I got Rick's aluminum.
Welcome to S2K Nation!
Cheers!!

as people have mentioned...itll definately get worse in winter.

but what i have found to help is getting a heavier shift knob.
skunk2 makes a 440 gram shift knob that has made shifting for me less notchier. i have tried ricks countersunk as well and found it worse for me.

also, the higher in the rpm i go and then upshift, seems to feel smoother.
try shifting around 4.5K and up, see if that helps.

This is common for new S2000 owners. Your tranny is fine. That's just how the S2000 is. I was worried too, and thought it was the tranny fluid, but I realized it was the way I shift, not the tranny. It takes awhile to get used to it. Adjust you shifting style.

This is how I feel when I shift into 2nd. It's only 2nd gear for me that it feels notchy. So I realized that if I go higher in the rpm and then shift, it's a little smoother.

Yeah I had an 04 Gt and it drove like crap. One of the things I hated was the knotchy transmission. So that is one reason I wanted to get rid of it, but not the only. There was actually a known problem with the mustang trans and a TSB issued for it and all.

I live in FL so it is not the cold weather thats for sure

My drive to work is about 5 miles so I prob do not get up to full temp by the time I get there.

I have noticed that I normally try to follow the L pattern when shifting from 2nd to 3rd but when I go straight in at an angle it seems to smooth it out a bit.

Guess I just need more time and miles on it.

Thanks for all the comments. Can't believe I didn't get one forum nazi telling me to search. This place may just be alright.

Oh it totally could've gone that way, you got lucky this time

Like was mentioned, experimenting with safe choices in tranny oil combined with aftermarket shift knobs may yield a positive result. good luck.
