Default new s2000 and a 3 hour interstate drive

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a brand new 2006 S2000 - I'm planning on going for a three hour drive to a nearby city - I'll be on state highways / interstate for most of the duration of the trip

Is it advisable to take my new S2000 (less than 50 miles on it so far) - or should I take my old Corolla?

I heard before that one shouldn't take a brand new unbroken-in engine on a interstate for long durations...

Cheers

personally I'd take the Corolla and break in the new S according to the owners manual.

P. 108 of your owner's manual...

* Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration. Do not exceed 5500 rpm for the first 600 miles of operation.

* Do not change the oil until the scheduled maintenance time.

* Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles.

Didn't say anything about freeway driving. Actually, I've done about 50% highway 50% city so far (520 miles on the clock). Only this morning I over rev'd the engine to 6000 rpm. Hope I didn't damage it or cause the engine to lose 5 hp. Anyway, at 80 MPH you'll be at around 4200 rpm. You'd be fine on the 3-hour trip. I just don't see any reason not to drive the S. Unless you don't feel comfortable parking your S at the destination.

Drive the S. It'll be mad at you later if you don't.

3 hours is like, what, 200 miles? Dealers have driven brand new S2000s farther than that just to deliver them. Some of you are over thinking this one way too much. Do what the owner's manual says and it says nothing about not driving it for hours on the freeway.

Or you could just let it live the rest of its days in your garage until death do you part

I've been waiting three weeks for my new S2k to arrive, the whole time debating whether I should drive from Seattle WA to Santa Fe NM -- a 1440 mile/23.5 hr drive one way according to mapquest -- with it or just fly. I just picked it up yesterday (only 6 miles on it ), and before I even got home from the dealership, my mind was totally made up: I'm driving for sure!!

As mentioned above, the manual says nothing about not doing this during the break-in period, but I have read other posts where they say the rpm shouldn't stay constant; so I won't use cruise-control, at least until after I reach the 600 mile mark, and will make sure I speed up and slow down often.

What better way to get to know and break in this awesome car than to take it on a road trip? Should satisfy that "I wanna drive it!!" urge, eh?!

Unless you speed like a madman, you shouldn't have to speed up and slow down. You can easily cruise around the speed limit at a constant road speed and just use 5th sometimes and 6th sometimes. 5th should not take you above 5500 rpm.
