No VTEC Til 600 Miles -- Necessary?
Although I did wait until 600 miles to vtec (granted, at 590 miles i went out for a 25 miles drive, vtec'ing the last 15 miles.. hehe), but if it were such a concern, why wouldnt Honda, or any car company for that matter, write the break in procedure requirements into the ECU. It'd be easy enough to make an artificial redline at 6000 rpm until the engine showed 600 miles. I mean the ecu kinda already does it, but the parameter isn't mileage, but rather temp.
Ahh don't forget the "road test"
Keep in mind that all Cars are "road tested" at the dealership before delivery. This is usually only about 2-5 miles. The mechanics at the dealership are used to driving civics and accords all day long...I know for a fact when they "road test" an s2000 it sees 9000rpms during most of those 2-5 miles. I am a total lunatic about cars and extremly anal about them also. But even I revved it to 7500rpms or so well before 600 miles. There is no way this will damage the engine in any way.
Side note
A buddy of mine used to be a service manager at an Acura dealer. A customer bought a new 98 NSX and the mechanic doing the PDI on the car asked my pal if he wanted to come along for the "road test" well the "honda certified mechanic" ended up rapping the car around a guard rail at better then 120mph. Needless to say it was total and both people were fired.
Just an example of the "road test"
Well it is almost 3am EST here and I am rambling thats all for now.
Well actually my father owned two car dealerships(Chevy/Buick) while I was growing up and I was very friedly with all the mechanics at both of them...ah the stories I have heard about the "road test"...neutrel drops in brand new corvettes. taking a Brand new ZR-1 with less then 3 miles to over 170MPH etc.....
ok I am done
Wait 600 miles it can't hurt
