Don't sweat the noises. We don't have as much sound deadening as most cars and we have extra-noise components (e.g. gear-based limited slip in the differential).

These cars do have a lot of engine/tranny noises that are masked in other cars.


If you want to be more confident, swap out the tranny and diff fluids with nice, fresh fluid. While doing this you can check the magnetic drain plug for metal pieces; if you find none you are probably fine.

The noise you are hearing from the back of the car (I only hear it with the top up at around 3K RPM's with light throttle inputs) is called "gear whine" or "gear lash". It is completely normal and apparent in the S2000 because we don't have much sound proofing in the car, even with stock gearing in the differential. People running 4.56 and 4.57 gears seem to be reporting even louder gear whine than stock 4.10 gears. I suspect that all cars and trucks make this noise to some extent, they just have better sound proofing. If the sound bothers you that much, try using a thicker GL5 gear oil. If you are using a 75W-90, then try a SAE 90 or SAE 110. If you want a multi-vis, try 75W110 or 75W-140 synthetic GL5. But even with the thicker gear oil, you will still sometimes hear gear whine on really hot days. The oil is just getting thinner than it usually does as the differential reaches about 100degF above road temps.
Regardless, just try to enjoy the S2000 and all the beautiful noises!

I think I will try the thicker weights for piece of mind, I honestly think I'm just being paranoid but I can't help it as I have just purchased the vehicle not that long ago. I just want to do right by my baby......

I don't know what is in the car, I haven't changed the fluid myself yet, however I will be extremely disappointed when I drain the fluid and its black....

When you purchase a car used it should, IMO, have all fluids changed prior to sale.....

Thanks for the input guys, especially coming from such experienced members it really gives me piece of mind.

If you want something off the shelf, try Mobil 1 75W-140 then. If you don't mind ordering off the internet, then try LE 1605 (SAE 110) from Rick's or AMSOIL SVT 75W-110 off the AMSOIL website. You will only need one quart.
Since you already have the car in the air, you might as well buy a couple of quarts (2) of Honda MTF (white bottle cap, not red) and change the tranny fluid too. Enjoy your new car!
