Quote from Jeremy Clarkson from TOP GEAR on BBC, "Honda has made 50 million Vtec engines and have NOT one failure. NOT one." Of course, user error does not count such as down shifted over 9k for ap1 or 8k for ap2. I have a civic Si before S2k and I accidently hit cruise control in neutral, it rev well over 10k for a split second and now my engine is at 90k, it is running as smooth as ever. I vtec on that all the time since it is not as quick as the S and just sounds good. There has been no mechanical problem with engine, tranny ever. I don't compare b16 to f20 but I think they designed vtec to be used.
haha yea on the highway I wanted to harrass this porsche carrera for a little bit before he spanked me. I was cruising at 80ish in 6th so I downshift to 5th then I wanted to go into 4th but I accidentally stuck it in 2nd. redline indicator started going nuts and my rear wheels locked up. Needless to say I pushed down the clutch as fast as I could, my car is still running strong. WooHoo Go honda engineers!!

I don't VTEC enough. I find it hard to VTEC on city streets without looking like a stupid jackass.

It's not I don't want to, I just don't have any opportunities on my daily commute.

Good post Xviper !! I always thought that it was up to me to know when to shift right and the closer i got to 9k was the closer i'm pushing the eninge to killing it self. Which means at times i have to keep one eye glued to the Tach one glued to the road...very frustrating..
That's why you have two eyes. To drive the S2000 properly, you need to drive crosseyed. You would do well to master this valuable skill.

BTW, doesn't the tach flash a few times when the engine reaches redline? I normally shift around 8600 or 8700, so I'm not positive what it does at 9000. However I thought I saw the flashing tach on a Best Motoring video.

I installed a shift light that flashes in my peripheral vision, so I never have to take my eyes off the road (or racetrack) when doing upshifts at redline.

yes the 3 or 4 bars beyond 9K will flash really fast when you are redlining.

Mine is too loud (and fast IMO) to Vtec on normal streets. Thus, I only and always Vtec when getting on the freeway. That's normally 1/3 of the time I take my car out.

I agree with it being hard to VTEC on streets. It's just not practical to VTEC in city driving. I find that the car is quick enough to still "drive it like you stole it" while shifting before 6000. I've beaten so many cars without VTECing.

One time after beating a Miata M edition, I looked over at the driver at the next light and said "and I didn't even have to VTEC"

From personal experience I find that shifting at 8600/8700 makes a big difference. I know it's only 400/300RPM lower but it just doesn't seem as quick... Maybe I just like the blinking tach too much to let off the throttle (but off before the rev limiter of course lol)
