Default Notchy feeling when shifting...is it normal?

I just bought a MY00 with 60k miles and feels notchy when I shift between 1-3rd gears..I read that many people have this problem too..(if it is a problem).
is this normal?
I can feel the metal parts (i guess synchros?) moving underneath the gear box..
sometimes the metallic feel is strong enough that it seems like I'm forcing the gear in...as if I'm not supposed to be changing the gear at that time..
is it normal?
can it be fixed? how?

As was mentioned above, if you do not know the service history for your car it might be a good idea change out tranny and rear differential fluids; a change in tranny fluid can make a BIG difference.

You may wish to post this question in the "Under the Hood" forum and check out the The OIL JOURNALS! Diff, Engine, Tranny fluids thread.

GM Syncromesh helped out quite a bit, you should check it out. I would say it solved about 40% of the notchiness, but the transmission is inherently notchy, and nothing to worry about.

Search "GM Syncromesh" and you will find an abundance of info on this great fluid.
